TWO ARRESTS AND RECOVERY OF STOLEN PRoreRTY.—Yesterday afternoon Detectives Coomes and Miller arrested two alleged col. ored sneak thieves—Jvdson Howard and Henry Brown—on suspicion of their having robbed the house of Mrs. Mary E. Gannon, in ihe West End, last Tuesday evening. They were locked up at police headquarters, when they acknowledgea that they had taken the jewelry, and told where it was concealed. The oMcers secured it all, and several watches aud chains which had been stolen from other persons. Youne Rocves.—Jobn Robinson and Henry Johnson, colored boys. crept slyly into the fancy store kept by Mrs. N. E. Jenkins, Pa. avenue, between Sth and 7th streets, and robbed’ the money drawer. The evening was taken up in considering the amendmenis tothe constitution ana by- laws reported by the committee, Mr. Harlan offered a resolution, which was adopted, thanking Theodore N. Vail, general superintendent railway mail service, for his unthing efforts in behalf of the members of this association and his endeayors to secure be us an increased compensation for our ser- vices. After authorizing the secretary to print 5,000 copies of the proceedings of the convention for distribution among railway employes, and fix- ing the bonds of the general secretary aud treasurer at $10,060, the meeting adjourned. Relief for Fever Sufferers. An adjourned meeting of the citizens of East Washington, was held last evening at McCauley’s Hall, Col. Tait presiding, and L. A. Del secretary: A contribution of 320 was received from Mrs. M. A. Devlin. The secretary reported that #136 had been sub- seribed and 38! paid in. Moxon, a native of Washington, and a telegrapher in that city. Although very young he wasa general favorite among telegraphers, who are deeply affected by his death. He was a graduate of the Western Union office in this city—being em: posed fora long time as an operator in the Western Union branch at the Post oflice de- partment, thence transferred to the main office. After services as a first-class operator here, he went west and finally located in New Orleans. Mr. Moxon was a brother of Miss Ada Moxon, well known in the amateur musical circles of this city. The contract for the construction of the Pump house between the District Commission- ersand Henry Himber was executed to-day, and satisfactory bonds given. THE WORK OF CLEANING THE CITY. Owing to the obstructions inciden to a change of contractors for removing the garb- age and effal, very many compiaints have been made within the past two or three days of such accumulations. Health Officer Townshend has used his utmost endeavors to have this | | Work continued ina satisfacto: manner tothe housekeepers, and yesterday he notified Mr. McCauly, the contractor, that he must put on more carts to-day and stop this complaining, or his contract would be annulled. This morn- ing early Mr. McCauly appeared in front of the Health Officer with thirty-three extra carts aud horses and one hundred and fifty men, and they were immediately set to work. The health officer feels more confident now than ever that Mr. MeCauly will carry out his work in a satisfactory manner, after some of the first obstacles incident toa change of contract- ors have been removed. Dr. Townshend has a double force employed in the cleaning of alleys and strewing them with sulphate of lime. The alleys will soon be in as perfect sanitary condition as it ts pos- sible to make them. Some hide-packing and rag and bone depots are to be proceeded against by action in the eonrts. Cassidy, charged with an aflray ; Cassidy $5 and Covle dismissed. .MYsTERIOUS.—While a cout named Lucien Duffey was gunning this morning near the lace where the tan yard drain empties into unting creek, he found a straw hat, a grey vest, a handkerchief and a table napkin lying on the ground. He called a gentleman near by, and on examining the pockets of the vest a pocketbook containing $250 in money, two tailors’ thimbles, a tape measure, a package of pins, some ferry and street car tickets and Sundry papers were found. Among the papers is the pension roll of Wm. H. Nims, Co. B, 6lst N.Y. volunteers. allowing him a pension of $24 “for loss of nose and right eye by a shell,” Iso a letter from W. H. Brookin lew Bar- lin,” and receipts for two registered letters sent from Washington—one to Alfred A. Nims, Dansville. Mich., and the other to A. L. Forbes, Stockbridge, Mass. THE MODERN SoLomon.—Judge Josiah Potter showed himself to be the modern Solomon, when he put Tom Fallon, the black- smith, and his young Hebrew ‘bride in a room alone together to settle their differ- ences. The result was that the two came out arm in arm smiling in less than two hours. THE GREAT Fige IN Omana.—The fire in Omaha, Neb., burned all Wednesday night, and at noon yesterday was not extinguished. The remains of the four firemen were found inan unrecognizable state. The loss on the hotel building is $200,000. August Kountze, of New York, bought it a few months ago under foreclosure. Kitchen Brothers lose heavily. AFFAIRS IN British CoLumBia.—A Vic toria (British Columbia) dispatch says the legislature was prorogued after passi ne the Chinese tax bill, disfranchising all officials and passing the secession memorial. Before the royal commission Father Faquet gave Startling evidences to the prevalence of corruption and bribery in the district of Kooteney. A Car CoNDUCTOR IN TROUBLE.—The Rock- ville Advocate says: “The case against Wm. Whaley, ‘a conductor on the Baltimore and Ohio railroad, for an assault upon Mr. C. B. Vickery, was examined before Justice D. H. Bonic on Wednesday. The evidence showed that Whaley attempted to eject Mr. Vickery from a train near Forest Glen, after having taken a ticket from him for passage from Rockville to Washington. Whaley was held for the action of the grand jury at the Novem- ber term of court.” BEECHER, in a recent sermon at San Fran- cisco, exclaimed: “How many men there are that are like those fish we in Boston har- -—four-fifths of them are mouth and the rest tail.
