There were 51 specimens of apples, 41 of pears, 8 of grapes, 7 of peaches, 2 of figs, and 1 of quinee; also, some fine specimens of Seed poactoe and apples exhibited by Stac: Snowden, of Fairfax county, Va. AN AFFECTING SCENE IN CourT. — This morning Justice Humphreys had before him the parties in the habeas corpus case of Elizabeth Johnson vs. Laura Contee; the object of the writ was to obtain the possession of the three-year female child of the relator from the custody of Laura Contee, the respon- dent. The parties appeared this mornin with numerous witnesses. Messrs. Closs an Cahill appeared for the relator and Messrs. Thos. F. Miller and L. I. O'Neal for the re- spondent. It was alleged that the relator had jaced the child in the care and under the con- fret of the respondent during its minority, and thatshe had no nee itas alleged in her ition. The judge, amidst the pro- foundest silence on the part of the spectators and members of the bar present, proceeded to deliver a very interesting disquisition upon the immoralities pervading society. And con- cluding, he called the child (who looked pecu- liarly bright and intelligent) to his side on the bench and after a few kind words bade it seek its “mother,” and the child rushed to the arms of the woman Contee.
