Well, they might adjourn.” Such was the brief and pertinent reply of Mr. Wright, chief of the Massachusetts bureau of statistics, to Congressman Hewitt’s inquiry, the other day, as to whether “he knew of anything that Con- gress could do to benefit the working classes.” This answer is not only to the point, but it is strictly true. There is not an intelligent and observing business man in the United States who does not know that industrial and commercial affairs throughout the whole coun- try were ina better condition up to the day Congress met last fa!l than they were at any time while it continued in session. In other words, there was a paralysis in nearly every branch of business the moment Congress as- sembied and its members began agitating ex_ pansiov, contraction, resumption, repudia. tion, all-me“alcurency, unlimited greenbacks, and innumeradle otuer patent plans for making good times without hard work and economy. Furthermore, there was a visible improvement immediately after the adiourn- ment of ihat body, when its members became Powerless for mischief, except in their indi- vidual capacity. Manifestly what the country needs, therefore, as Mr. Wright's answer im- Plies, is to be let severely alone by her states- men for a little while. Confidence isthe main thing required, and this cannot be had so long as there danger that every thing affecting the business and prosperity of the country will be turned upside down by politi- ¢al demagogues and adventurers who are sim- ply playing their cards for a re-election. In answer to a correspondent we state that the act to rep2al the bankrupt law takes effect September Ist, and according to its provisions eases filed by Saturday of this week are dis- charged at any time afterwards, but the cases must Le filed by that time. The recent slight accident on the railroad up Mount Washington tends to show the security of passengers in making the ascent rather than the possibility of future accidents with more disastrous consequences. The en- gine which pushes the passenger car up the steep incline is of peculiar pattern, the boiler being placed at an angle which brings it hori- zontal (or nearly so) in the ascent, and is fur- nished with cog wheels. The turning of these wheels causes the ride up and down the moun- tain to be aceompanied by a noise like that which is heard when a well-bucket is drawn upor letdown. Recently a number of cogs in the rear driving-wheel of one of the engines gave way, but by the immediate application of the brake on the forward driving shaft of the engine the train was instantly stopped. The precautiovs in the way of brakes, cog wheels and other devices for preventing serious acci- dents on the road are numerous, but none too many, when it is considered that the un- checked descent of a train would mean certain death to the passengers. More than 100,000 persons have been carried up and down in safety, and such care has been taken to insur - security that the journey is probably mad with less risk than ordinary railroad travel The road is a triumph of inventive and engi neering skill, and is besides a great conveni- ence to the traveling public. —\_ ee —___ The public will ever be gratefnl tothe recent inventors of a device by which the nuisance @f the steam blowing from safety valves of locomotives is stopped. The steam is con- ducted through a twoinch pipe from the safety valve to the tender, invisibly and noise- lessly, where it is used te heat the feed water. The tables of the bureau of statistics as to our commercial condition as a nation furnish all the consolation for hard times that can be derived from figures. Our exports for the last fiseal year were the largest In the history of the country, being $257,785,961 in excess of our imports, and an increase of 153 per cent. since 1868. The branches of trade in which this increase has been mainly made are capable of still further development. In breadstuffs the tnerease in ten years has been more than @ hundred million dollars in vaiue, and the limit is not yet reached by any means. Other provisions, coal oil and petroleum, manufac. tures of cotton, metals and manufactures of them, coal, agricultural implements and live animals are other items in which trade is much larger. Favorable legislation in Eng- land, improvements in the methods of trans- porting live stock, and a general turning of attention in that direction, are expected to make a wonderful increase in the exports under the last head. We have shown the same diligence In cutting down our imports that we have in enlarging our export trade. The decrease in this respeet since 1873 amounts to more than two hundred million dollars. The falling off is largely in articles which we have learned to manufacture for ourselves, and in many cases we have completely reversed the cirect of the tide of trade. Iron and steel and articles manufactured from them, clocks, watches, manufacture of cotton, flax and silk, wool, carpets, dress goods and a great variety of other manufactures are the principal items in which a decrease is found. The whole show! is encouraging in the extreme, and there is no reason to believe that the direction oftrade which has been in our favor for the last three years will be soon reversed. Where trouble in making both ends meet, showing an apparent national pros- perity are not likely to be convincing or com- forting. It is. nevertheless, true that when re- «overy from the temporary depression under hich the country now labors gets fairly » under way, its course will be greatly hastened ly the favorable condition of the nation as re- > Deets its foreign commerce. It has been discovered that even the moving smell from a fertilizer manufactory is not without a useful mission in this world. And from this discovery comes a grain of comfort for persons living in the vicinity of such works, whose sentiments on the subject are like those of Aaron, as expressed in the fa- miliar lines: “Says Aaron to Moses, Let’ cut off our noses.” It ts claimed that the ammonia and sul- phurie acid vapor set free by the manufac- tories rout chills and fevers and other mala- rious diseases ; and it does seem unreasonable that any sensible disease which possesses the power of shifting its quarters should remain for any length of time in the neighborhood. it is argued that actual experience has proved the efficacy of this remedy. Those who are about to establish such manufactories will eonsequently do well to choose lew and damp ground forasite. Butit is not believed that this remedy for the chills and fevers will ever become popular. LAaTes!! LATHS!!1 4 Ts bow din at Biscoe’s wharf One Mullion TATHS.
