RS The money to pay for the time required must in all cases accompany the order. Uther- sobse the paper cannot be sent That the destruction of the Minneapolis our mills was caused by the explosion of Hlour dust, is proved by the occurrence of sim- Alar accidents since that event, in which the been evident, and by the scientific ®xperiments on the subject recently conelud- ed. A miller at Chippewa Falls. (Wis.,) waile examining a spot on the grinding floor of his mill, was recently burned and throwa vio- Jently back by an explosion caused by the sift- ing down of tlour on a lantern whieh he car- Yied in his hand. The results of the scientific examination into the cause of the Minneapolis disaster, to which reference is made above, @re recorded in a recent number of the Scien- tific American. When blown by a bellows into the zir surrounding a .as flam-, coarse bean does not burn; fine bran and t¢@ur dust burn quickly and with considerable bli middili burn quicker, but with less flam ‘wheat dust, flour and general mill dust, burn very quickly, much like gunpowder. Flour dust, flour middlings, ete., when mixed with air, thick enough to ignite from particle to particle, aud separated so that each par- ticle is surrounded by air, will unite with oxygen im the air, producing a gas at high temperature, which requires an addi- tional space; hence the bursting or explosion. Electric sparks and platinum wire at white hheat passed through the dust eause no ex- glosion. Glowing charcoal produces no ex- plosion until fanned into a blaze. A common Kerosene lantern when surreunded by dust of all degrees of density does not cause an ex- plosion, but when the dust is blown into the Dottom, through the globe and out of the top, it ignites. To explode quickly the dust mast be dry. Evidently when an explosioa has b-eu started in a volume of dusty air, loose flour may be blown into the air and made a source ofdanger. These facts are of the highest ia- terest and importance to miilers and mill owners, and ¢ able the public to understand the cause of «° least one of the mysterious explosions, which have proved so fatal as well asso puzziiug. The cause of the candy fac tory disaster still remains to be discovered. —<re-__ The sign of recognition adopted by the Knights of Labor, an organization claimed to umber 50,00) persons in different sactions of the United States, is gravely represented to be “the thrusting of the first finger of the rizht hand into the shirt collar.” Itis pointed out by a skeptical editor that in July and August More than half the people you met gothrouzh fhis mysterious pantomime. This observed fact gives some idea of the numbers and bold- ness of the Knights of Labor, who are evi- dently a hot-weather organization. ————<ee--___. The leaders of the recent riots in Ottawa who were so unfortunate in some cases as to be arrested, have been punished so lightly for their lawless actions that they may reasoffbly feel encouraged to repeat their a‘tempts at Violence at the first opportunity. A fine of fifty dollars or an imprisonment for three weeks in default of payment, seems hardly a Sufficient penalty for an off-nee whose natural accompaniments are robbery, incendiarism andmurder. If the most serious consequences of riots were prevented in those at Otiawa it was not due to any lack of purpose or will on the part of the rioters, and in punishing them it is unfortunate that their intentions caunot be taken into consideration. ————— On the basis of the vote in New Hampshire last spring, the state legislature, which under the bill passed at the last session apportioning the representation of towns, contains 293 members, would stand 154 republicans to 134 democrats. On the same basis some slight changes in senatorial districts would leave the republicans with 15 votes in the senate against S heid by the democrats. At the Minnesota state fair, which will be held <1 St. Paul early in September, machinery will be creeted for the purpose of manufac-ur- ing ané granulating sugar obtained from the Stalks of a certain variety of Indian corn grown in that state. It is said that successful experiments of this kind haye already been made in two counties of Minnesota, and that the manufacturing operations at the state fair ‘will be more in the nature of a demonstration than atrial. The sugar thus obtained is said fo compare favorably in quality with that sent from Cuba. But the important point to be as. certained is whether the maize sugar can be manufactured in large quantities at a sufi- ciently low price to compeie with that from the BSugar-cane. Sugar cau be obtained from a great variety of plants, doth vegetable and Aruit, if any one is willing to pay the cost of manufacture. Indian corn was used as a source of sugar before the Spanish invasion of £ngiand, and a factory near Toulouse, in the South of France, is mentioned where about 20,000 pounds are annua'ly o!cined from this plant. adventures y plenty for the aunount2m ly eseapad bei Accidents to actors and si of singers are going tot balance of the season. that Mr. Edwin badly drowned the ot resort, we are admonis} English opera company wi uutumnal tour. omedod 43 ten its An epidemic of bDankru is now raging in the United States. Tne frost, which wii cheek its ravages, may be expected in about a week. By the first of September all the dis. | honest, reckiess and unfortunate de i ahe country may be expected to have s wumbed. A peculiarity of this disease is that An most cases it is rather enjoyed by the atient, who seeks rather than avoids the con- Jagion. Vosburgh’s troubles are not over by aay Mmeans. He does not seem to have satis- ied bis congregation as weil as he did the Jury, which acquitted him of the charge of wife poisoning. Thirty-seven members of his whureb have sent to him a letter requesting his resignation, with the suggestion that more names can be obtained if necessary. It does not follow however, that these discontented amembers of his congregation believe him to be guilty of the serious offence with which he has been charged. It may be that while they hold him innocent of actual crime, the de ‘velopments of the trial haye convinced them lat he is not a pastor to be proud of. 8 es ‘Tae WEEKLY STAR. now ready, contalns all the News of the Week; the Yellow Fever ‘Visitation; the Potter Investigation; Edi- torial Correspondenee from Europe; Camp Meeting Correspondence: Kearney, the California agitator: Lively Local Notes: Agri- cultural Matters: White House and Depart- ment News ; Proceedings of the Courts: iL Affairs: Chvice Stories: Poams and 3 —s meray Matters. postage erms. per num, in advance, Prepald | sldgly copies Aye cents, in Wrappers. | disoived by mutual consent.
