TRUE ADVERTISIN?.—Millions of dollars are annually thrown away i this country in useless and illegitimate advertising. The experience of all enterprising and successful business men is that nothing repays so well the money invested as adver- ‘ising in a paper which EVERYBODY reads, That 1s the true way to secure publicity. The best busi- ness men know the value of advertising in such a Paper—and such a paper is THs EVENING STAR. It has the cireulation in proportion to the population of the city in which it is printed of any paper in the world, Jt practically covers the whole eld, Hydrocianic Poisoning by Swallow- ing Peach Kernels. A fatal case of poisoning by peach stones which has just occurred in Paris may serve as a warning to those families in which chit- dren are allowed to look after themselves for hours together. it may be assumed that very few children under the age, sar of lv or 12, have any idea that peach stones or peach blos- soms are dangerous. They have been shown the deadly mig ‘Shade, and probably the wild hemlock, and havea canny dread of them; but nursemaidsare not nearly sosond of point- ing out the peach tree as an object of horror and aversion. The victim of the recent acei- deut in Paris had certainly not been cautioned aginst the attractions of the peach. He had developed at the tender age of five-and-a-half the Faculty of reasoning on inductive princi- ples, and he saw no reason to doubt that as cherry and apricot stones contained eatable kernels the nobler fruit had at least an equally desirable treasure in its inmost recesses. Ac- ‘dingly he secreted the stones of a number of peacheswhich had been sent to his mother from the country, and possessing himself of a ham. mer, when left alone broke them open in tus. Sriousty and then set to upon a solid feast to which he did hasty but complete justice. The taste of the kernels was not perliaps ona par with the expectations previously entertained, but it would be ridiculous to go through with the severe labor of cracking such lard sheils without entering into the fruition of the labor when once finished. S» the unlucky child was found by his parent on her return, writhing in the grievous agonies produced by prussic or hydroeyanic acid. The arrival and efforts of the doctor were vai nd another item had to d to the long’list of “deaths by impru- It is as well, vow the season of wall fruit has arrived, to explain what extent of poisoning Is posse! ed by the peach-stone. The writers on toxicology state that an ounce of the kernels contains about one grain of pure hydrocyanie acid. and it is known that one grain of the poison will almost toa certainty ill any adult person. Two thirds of a grain has very ofieen been fatal, and, indeed, may be regarded as a fatal dose for a child.—[ Lon- don Globe. The Captive Balloon at the Tuileries The large captive balloon placed in the court-yard of the Tuileries, between the ruins of the palace and the portico of the Carrousel, has been inflated, and has taken $),0) eubie feet of hydrogen. The balloon is 120 feet hig! and is fixed at a distance of 180 feet from the ground, The sides ef the balloon are com posed of a material quite impermeable, and pable of holding the fas for several mouths. ‘st there isa layer of muslin, then one of india rub! next on that one of linen, with one of vuleahized india rubber, and another of muslin varnished and painted white upon the outside. The quantity of material used was about 4.30 yards, each square tf rd weighing two pounds, and costing about lls. fd. As a large number of people are to be taken up in this balloon at the same time, the most minute precautions have been taken against the possibility of acci- dent; and M. Giffard, the engineer, who has superintended its preparation, has had the car made of a circular form, with the cable in the center. This car is twenty feet in diame- ter; and the corridor in which the passengers are to take their places has a double floor, and contains sixteen compartments for the storage of all articles which are required fora pro- longed ascent Not more than fifty passengers will be taken at once, and ae will be carried up to gn elevation of 2,0” feet, the balloon being attached to a cable weighing three tons, and capable of bearing a tension of twenty- ground, together with the Improvements. I wish'I was one o them poetry writers ¢ I'd write the bulliest poem about Dandy Fer. guson you ever read, you hear me. Yes, he’s married. Gotmarried after he came out. ‘Ta! about weddin’s! Thet was a weddin’; ev'ry- body got an invite, and ev rybody pil in to see the gamest man in the state tie to the gamest woman on God's footstool. Who was she? Why, Maggie Hildreth, of course. Who else'd it be, I'd like to know? What became of Harry Miller? Well, thet’s purty good. Miller, ye see, came out all right, an’ you bet he cidn't rest till he'd begged Bill Slocum's pardce fur leavin’ him in the snaft as he did; ut Bill wouldn't have it: said thet Miller 'd balanced accounts by savin’ the lifeo’ Dandy Fergusop, the man thet saved him. But thet’s played. You want to know what become of him. Well—say, look here, mister, I don't like to own it, but I'm the cuss— Harry Miller. Interdooce ye to Dandy Ferguson? Of course 1 will, an’ you'll never git an interduction to a gamer man, or one its more honorable to Know, An’, mister, ef ye ever tell about the Chappa- ral Shaft an’ how Dandy Ferguson stood by thet win'lass in the red hot lustin’ works, jest throw it in somewhere thet he’s better'n'four kings in this camp—it'll top off the story first rate, an’, besides, you bet it's more’n the solid truth. E. H. CLoveu. RE IS ANOTHER PHASE of pulpit and stage:— An ingenious Englishman, who de- plores the neglected education of the clergy in the matter of impressive reading, recentl wrote to Mr. Irving, suggesting that he should give recitals from the Scriptures. The propo- sition was rather startling, and the actor modestly declined to attempt the instruction of persons who have not yet acquired the art of reading Holy Writ with expression. This curious appeal reminds the Cardiff Tunes of Faust’s reply when Wagner asks whether a priest rg learn from an actor how to preach: "Yes, if the priest an actor be.” MR. JACKSON AS A MATRIMONIAL AGENT.— migrant Superintendent Jackson received yesterday a postal card in reply to the applica tion of Conrad Naglie, of Peterboro’, N. H., for a wife. The fair writer says that she “would very much like to t.{l that position,” as she does “not see any chaoce in New York” for her. She describes herse'f as “ ey fair looking, black hair, blue eyes, and 20 years old.” She speaks German and French and un- derstands music. She asks Mr. Jackson to “find out how old he is, and the color of his hair and eyes.” The whole concludes with a P. S.: “How is his cash’ Mr. Jackson recent- ly received another letter from a man in Maine, asking for a servant girl. It was horribly mis- lied, yet the writer described himself as of cultivated tastes.” He said the girl would not have much to do, and in her leisure time, ight have the use of his “Libry."—N. ¥. Be- fore the day came an official called on the young man aud said: “ We have a floating debt of $300. We shall have to take that out of your salary, and you must live the first yeat om 31,200." You must not say anything about it, for it will cause troubl The young man went directly to an eminent minister. The pastor said: “That is a trick, young man after the order of the New-York ring.
