be Z j 7 E SYRUP ¥RUM A PHYSICIAN, | Nortu HYDE PARK. YT, Feb, 7, 1876. Messrs. BETH W. FUWLE & SUNS, Boston, ‘Mass. : Gentlemen—You may perhsps remember that I wrote you several weeks ago in regard to the use of the **PeRUVIAN SyRrup’’ for my wife, who was suffering from general debility. the sequence of typhoid dysentery. I had tried the most noted | physicians in this state and also in Canada, without relief, At your recommendation she commenced | the use of the SYRUP. |The first four bottles made but little impression, but while taking the fifth, she to improve rapidly. and now, after using six of fhe dolar bottles, she regained her strength, and Is able to do most of the work ahout the house: and I feel that I cannot speak too highly in praise of PERUVIA® BYRUP. [have prescribed it to sew- eral of my patients, and have procured the sale of several dozen of it here. You can make any use of thls letter that you see fit. 8 very truly, | H. D. BELDEN, M.D. | | | THE PERUVIAN SYRUP | CURES | Dyspepsia, Dropsy, | Chronic Diarrhea, Boils, Nervous, Affections, Chills and Fevers, | Haumors, Loss ef Cons:itu- Liver Complaint, tional Viger, Neural- aia, Female Com- plaints, and | ALL DISEASES j ORIGINATING IN A BAD STATE OF THE BLOOD, OR ACCOMPANIED BY DEBILITY | oR | A LOW 8TATE OF THE SYSTEM, i} | FEOM REV. JOHN GREGORY, Pastor of the Wesleyan Methodist Church at Piltistun, Luzerne County, Pa. My Dear Sir:—Having at varions times, person- ally, and in my own and other fami ies, tested the great value of the medicine calied PERUVIAN SYRUP, Or PROTECTED SOLUTION OF PROTOX- IDE OF TRON, 1 most cheerfully recommend t*, SSPOCIANT to ose who are suffering from dyspep” tic and nervous disorders. As a reliable anc pow- | erful alterative, it is, I think, unsurpassed: and aga tonic, free from all the objectionanie features | Of alcoholic remedies, It isa most efficient auxil- lary to the (earl ance cause. Oneof the greatest inidrances to the *: hperance reform at present is. | as | think, the medical use of alcohoile stimulants. | Whatever may be argued as to their necessity in | certain cases, we have in the PARUVIAN SYRUP a safe and efficient substitute for those dangerous remedies. This testimony is given unsoll cited, | With the hope that some who are not yet ac- | quainted with the valuable properties of the medi- ine may be Induced to give it a trial. We can not be sure that the delicate muscles of the eye are in a condition to be used until the muscles of the leg and arm have re- g ined their strength and firmness. 6, The general health should be maintained by a good diet, sufficient sleep, and exercise, amusement and a proper restriction of the hours of hard work. One ought not to expect strong eyes in a body Weakened by bad habits or an thjudicious amount of labor. Bright gas-lights in crowded rooms, and the impurity of the air in such places are eg; pecially to be avoided. Medical advice should be sought in regard to any nervous debility, disorder ef the organs of digestion, or any functional disturb. auces of a general nature, whether they ap- pear to have a direct connection with the weakness of the sight or not. 7. Take plenty of sleep—sieep is a sovereign balin for those who suffer from weak sigit. Retire early and avoid the painful evening lights. Ten hours’ sleep fur delicate eyes is better than eight. Darwin Contradicted. APES NOT MAN'S PROGENITOKS. Prof. A. R. Grote thus writes in the Popular Scirnce Monthly: ‘The position of science with regard to man and the anthropoid apes is, that in no case can. these latter be considered our progenitors or descendants. The physical and mental char- acteristics are too diverse to admit of such conclusions. The apes have evidently come down another line of descent, although the time when both the apes aud man may have emerged from a common branch of the tree of animal life may not be so very. long past. But, whenever the line of man and that of the an: thropoid apes coincided, it is clear that now the tendency must be to diverge more and more. The resemblances between the apes and man, however, cannot be overlooked by the thinking mind. They are so great that if we assumed the theory of degeneracy to be true, and so were willing to throw the whole animal Hinggom, backward on its tail instead of forward on its feet, we might con- sider them to be degenerate and “wild” men. And it is mteresting to find that this ts wha they were formerly held to be. The early pictures of the orang and chimpanzee exem. pity, this notion by giving them perfectly uman features and cree Posiiton, brutalized obly by their hairy boas. hey were, in fact, assumed to be a yery abandoned k nd of man, and not a very elevated kind of moukey. It is thought by Some tribes of men to this day that the apes could talk if they would, but they are afraid that if they do they will be made slaves of and obliged to work. From the naked white skin, through the yellow and Ted to the black and then to the black with hair, does indeed seem a gradual transition ; and, if we concede the erect posture, the admission of the ape into the human family ean with it no little show of justice.— (Prof. A, R. A DUEL WITH ParER Wavs — How (he Honor of Tuo Indiana Gentleman wis Vin dicated.—Gen. Thos. They were members of a party who had ton an excursion, and the quar- relarose between McClure and Green while the other members were absent from the camp. During the progress of the war of words their companions returned, when it Was proposed to seitle their differences ac- cording to the code. It was determined that th hould fight with shot guns at 10 paces, and Jacob Greiuer and Robert H. Humphreys were chosen to act as seconds. The duelists took their place ch pus and determined, and at the proper signal both fired, bat with- outefect. Humphreys rei ed 'that they had fired too high, and would have to try again. The weapons were reloaded, and the principals took their places. At the word Mc. Clure’s gun was discharged, and the General, findiug himseif unhurt, fred into the air, teil- ing his autagonist he wou'd spare his life. It was decided that the honor of both had been vindicated, and the seconds refused to allow a third round to be fougit. Ter that young Heston was crushed to death. In addition to this the Hestons had commenced suit against Lavin, and the whole thing preyed so heavily on his wife’s mind that upon her re- turn home from the house of mourning she was taken sick and died Friday morning. An Idyl of a Woman's Clothes. THE RUSE TWO LOVERS ADOPTED TO woOD- WINK A SHARP-EYED PARENT. The picturesque little town of Westfield, on the New Jersey Central Railread, about twen- ty miles from this city, was ail agog lately over a recent marriage, Which made a ripple in the juiet life of the town. Dr. E. V. Smith, age ‘orty, wooed and won Miss Annie Clark, a len of sixteen, the daughter of L. 'V. Clarke, a wealthy retired merchant who for- 'y did business in New York. The lovers wished to get married at onee, but the parents of Miss Clarke objected, and told them to con- sider the step for six of eight months longer. Finding entreaties vain, they determined to take the matter into their own hands, and in order to secure the personal property of the would-be biide without arousing her lather’s suspicions, the doctor hit upon the novel method of carrying them off under his coat. So his devotion waxed stron his visits increased in number, and every time he bade her adieu he stuffed his coat with dresse: d_all sorts of garments, and filled his pockets with bits of ribbon. en his hat was brought into service to carry off a pair of curiiig-tongs. Sometimes the girl threw gar- ments from the window. which were caught by the doctor in the moonlight below. After two weeks of persistent industry, the doctor had accumulated several large Saratoga trunks full of clothes, and then one bright day Miss Clarke, telling her mother she was’ going to the village, repaired to the railroad station, joined the doctor, and the two came to this city, where they were married at the residence of the doctor's sister. After the ceremony the couple went to Long Branch and opened ne- otiations with the parents in Westfield. At first Mr. Clarke refused to communicate with them, but after a Week of indifference on thelr art, he presented them with a farm, on which a fine resid o the bride he gave a ostly Silk dress as a peace oifering.
