On | r Land it is said that his offence was | lot the thett of an official document, but only that of making a surreptitious copy of one, | and that there is no law by which he can ‘be Punished. Perhaps the proverbial case of the | mman who si dog, and, dogs not being Property, tried for appropriating the dog's ©ollar, may be repeated with modifications, and the clerk be convicted of larceny of the “paper on which the copy was written. It is alarkly suggested that if a case of theft ean be mide against the guilty . the government will proceed against the enterprising Globe for receiving stolen goods. The bottom really seems to be falling out of things. Private Dalzell, of blessed waste bas- ket memory, has gone back on himself, and on his late comrades in arms, as well. For years Private D. has stood as the sole living repre- Sentative of that vast body of usefu! and ouce popular men who earned muskets on the Union side during the lite unpleasantness, the last token, as it were, between those gal- lant spirits and black oblivion. And now h has flunked! As one of th ers toa call for a grand soldiers’ and sailors’ national re- union at Marietta, in September, he appears among a whole row of Generals, Colonels, Majors, Captains and Lieutenants, not piain “ Private Dalzell,” asof yore, butas “Hon. J. M. Daizell,” with something of a fonrish. This comes of sending a fellow tothe state legis- lature. ———re —___ Ina recent letter from Mr. Charles Reade to & gentleman in Cincianati very eu jusive evidence ii given that the once popular novei St is insane. +202 The euthustastie Mr. Comstock, who is en- gaged in suppressing New York vice, is some- times over-zealous, and is now playing the part of pursuer pursued, being the defeudiut ina civil action for damages brought agaiast him by a female doctor, whose busiuess he has been investigating after his vigorous fashion. While blunders may be made and great injus- tice done at times, it ean be said wiih truth that his operations have cheeked some glaring evils. —_-~. The famous baby-wagon case still convulses New York. New Yorkersare ex'remely sensi tive to noises, and one of them, a laity, was so overcome by the rumble and roar of the wie<ls of a baby-wagon, weighing nine p van Ls, p pelled across the room over her head, that sh- has obtained a legal ipjanetion against When Edison has completed his sound-destroy ing operations on the elevated riilway, he must iuvent some noiseless baby-wazon wheels. a —— A portrait of Mr. Tilden has been plared on exhibition in an Avenue window, evident!y for the inspection of an admiring and curious late. Some eighteen months ago, when the dried up little bachelor was regarded as a Possidle occupant of the Waite House, his pieture might have attracted some attention. But things are different now. It would, perhaps, be vain to imagine a noiseless train as a prodact of the future, but any approach to this would be a luxury to the citizen who sleeps, or attempts to sleep, with the run.cle of cars arising at | intervals to his windows. A new theory on the subj st of hydrophobia has been advanced. Dr. A.C. Castle, of New York, who has carefully studied the matter, | finds fault with the medical profession for paying so little attention to the disease as it | appears in the dog, and for devoting them- selves so exclusively to the second-hand form | of the disease as it appears in human beings. It is evident that the doctor is a man after Mr. Bergh’s own heart, The theory which he ad- vances is that rabies in the dog is a blood dis- wease, and that the eruptive disease common to such animals and known as the mange is a means of removing the hydrophobic poison from the dog's system. Considering the mange in the same category as cow-pox, small-pox and other eruptive diseases, he suggests as a preventive measure against hydrophobia the appligation of vaccine matter to dog bites. c.se$ are cited in which he has tried this method with suecess, As only a small per- centage of bites cause hydrophobia, whether | remedies are used or not, the question re- mains whether the cases in which the method ‘was apparently successful, would otherwise have developed Mntothe dreaded hydrophobia.
