SECRETARY SHERMAN ON SPECIE RESUMP- TION.—Secretary Sherman was asked yester- day if he intended to resume specie payments before January Ist next, the date contemplated by the resumption law. He replied that he did not; that he had now as much gold in the Treasury as be expected he would have by January Ist, but that the laws hampered him in resuinite before that date, althouzh he was just as weil prepared to resume forthwith, so far as the amount of gold coin on hand is ¢on- cerned, as he will be in January next.
