Failure of the Second Trial of Major Curtis. In the Criminal Court, Judge Wylie, in the ease of Edward Ray alias Major E. Curtis. alias Houghton, charged with having, on the 24th of March, 1877, committed a rape on the person of Miss Ella Tydings, an orphan girl, o Itimore, in a room in the National Hote!, ihe jury, who retired with the case about 6 p. m. on Monday, were called into court about 3'4 o'clock yesterday afternoon. ONE OF THE OUTRAGERS SENTENCED.— terday afternoon John Thomas, the colored boy convicted about two weeks since of an as- sault with intent to rape a little colored child named Ida Coga, aged five ee in George- town, was stood up in the Criminal Court for Judge Wylie asked him what he had to say why sentence should not be pro- nounced. “The boy replied: “I am just as in- nocent as a child in the cradle. “All I done was to slap the child in the face, and I hope the court will forgive me for that.” His Honor remarked: “You were not tried for that,” and after referring to the circumstances of the case, remarking that it was only the child's extreme youth that saved the completion of the more serious offense, sentenced the pri- soner to five years in the penitentiary, the full extent of the law.
