An impression pre- vails in Chicago that the communists are pre- paring for an outbreak this summer. It is certain that they are well supplied with fire arms and have been diilling uninterruptedly for months, with the avowed purpose of pro- tecting themselves in case of a strike if the state or federal troops should be employed against them. Several thousand persons are connected with the movement. The commu- nists are not without potitical power, having elected several of the municipal officers. It is claimed that the organization has gained a strong foothold in California, and is spreading in every direction. In Chicago the commu- nists are closely associated with the nineteen trades unions, and it is feared that a general Strike of the laboring classes will take place Within a month or two, which will be the pre- lude to violence and bloodshed. The mayor of the city is making preparations to guard against an outbre It possiblé that the danger may have been exiggerated in some respects, but enouzh remains, when the ex periences of last summer are remembered, to justify some apprehension. The platform of the social liberal commun- ists, which, perhaps, gives a good idea of the movement in a condensed form, is stated as follows “1 Eight hours for the present as a legal working day and prom) shment of all vi- olators, 2. Sanitary inspection of all condi- tions of labor, means of subsistence and d\ ings included. 3. Bureau of Labor ail the states as Well as in the ment. The officers of the same by the people. 4. Maine, is yet a matter of mystery. There seems to be no doubt that the vessel has Iwen chartered by the Russian government, but exactly what they propose to do with her is not se apparent. The surmise that she was to be turned into a cruiser for war purposes is pronounced improbable, for the reason that she is to would need to be almost entirely rebuilt to adapt her for such a purpose. It is not impos. sible, however, that she could mount some light guns, sufficient toenable her to prey upon the commerce of Eugiand in case of war, and trust to her speed to eseape, in case of pursuit by a British cruiser. From indica‘ions the attendance will be large throughout the season, and the exposiiion a success, financially and otherwise. The first exposition on an international! seale was that of England, in 1851, which was open for 41 days, and was visile by 6,989,195 per- Sons—average, 42.831 visitors per day. There Were 10,200,000 visitors to the Paris show of 1867, but this was open 210 days, giving an average of 48,566 visitors per day. Several steps in this direction haye been taken on both sides, and it is possible that a union will be effected. To-day the most sensible tramp of them all commences his peregrinations.
