T quite agree with all that has been said, yet it occurred tome that Mr. Douglass made a modest esti- mate of his race when he said they don’t build ships, they don’t build the domes you see. But who did build them? Such men as Adams and Sumner made their fame by their speeches | under that dome, and the speech jour colored brother has made us is better than making domes. But that is not my message. I would say the wisdom, the righteousness, and the grandeur of Abraham Lincoin’s act of emanci- pation no man willdeny. That it has conferred mnfinite Dlessings on our country, on both ‘a and on the world, very few question. This estimate of the act and of ils results will not be changed by the good conduct or the bad conduet of either race. But it is said th; the greatness of the blessing conferred on the colored Yr depends on their conduet. What they most dis what Burns calls the ‘gt ries privilege of being independent.’ this requires the willingness to labor and the prudence nd self-denial to save the fruits 'y young colored friends, let this. be among your good resolutions nd I will sa to the end th ndepender This speech was e Hy received. ton thanked the Presid resence, and Mr. C ft.
