Co1.D.—The season of the year is when people everywhere will be Id, and in many cases they will suffer | h and die. A little care would often pre- vent it. In the first place, as one of the means to prevent a cold, the daily bath in a warm room, with much’ friction is very important. In no case should the body be chilled. Use much friction over the chest and throat, and snuff into the nostrils a little of the water warmed to a comfortable temperature. Next, after the bath, take daily exercise in the open air, ueither too much nor too little; exposing the body somewhat to the cold and sun for a short time, but never exhausting it. One chief danger from cold is the exhausted state of the body that first occurs, so it is not able to resist unfavorable in- | fiuences. He told a vivid story of the beautiful sights he had seen while he was uncouscious, and leciared that since his recovery he was en- tirely free from the pains in his Stomach and Tungs, which had Jorarey, troubled him. It appeared, however, that his face had never lost its color, nor his head, throat and chest its warmth. He had not been declared dead by a medical man, and four hours after his sup- posed death his head was yet warm and his cheeks flushed. Dr. Nebinger was of the opinion that his condition was Rg epee ‘sd and said that the eonclusion that he was d had been too hastily adopted by his attendants, and that the appearances as described did not justify such an opinion. While Mr. Schrack was in the condition of outward unconsciousness described, his mind was evidently in a state of eestatic delirium. the result of his peculiar disease and mental condition. He stated that his first sensation when he became unconscious to surrounding outward circumstances was that of falling a long distance; then le found himself in a val- ley at the foot of a great hill; before him was a terrible black river, and on the opposite bank a great dark cloud. Some unknown force impelled him te walk into the riv ithouzh he dreaded to do so, h v walking through it,and went forw AS he passed through the river the cloud grail: ually opened, disclosing ene of sueh per- fect’beauty ashe declared himself utterly un- able to describe. Persons whom he had known in ife, but whom he had forgotten for years, he saw before him. The ion then began to fade, and his feeling on refaining conscious- ness was that of intense disappointment at beiag recalled from the beautifui scene. The case is of one peculiar interest, and all the more so, as Mr, Schrack is a very worthy and quite intelligent mar, who has suffered some severe reverses of fortune. It will be observed that Dr. Nebinger speaks of the peculiar affection of Mr. Schrack as “hysteroidal,” that is, having a resemblance to hysteria, a disorder quite common among Women, though occasionally found in men. The term used by Dr. Nebinger is precisely ng up, Oud 1 it | descriptive, and will be thoroughly under- stood by the medical profesuion and by stu- dents of medicine. The symptoms of some of the forms of hysteria, as Set forth in volume IL of Professor George B. Wood’s Practice of Medicine, are ve closely Sescriplive, in many of the details, of Mr, Schrack’s case. The outward symptoms of this malady are not always manifested by proxysms of muscular convulsion, jerkings, twitchings and other vielent action, but are sometimes very quies- cent in their form. Using portions of Dr. Wood’s text in abreviated form, we collate the following as among the symptoms. ‘They come rapidly and pi away rapidly. They are often ‘preceded fer a longer or shorter time by various distressing sensations. The pheno- mena comes on sometimes under exciting causes, sepecially ofa mental character. The Patient is sensible of distress at the pit of the stomach and of oppression about the chest. Sometimes there is tetanie rigidity of the muscles. During the phenomena there is an apparent want of consciousness, which in severe cases is realand complete. Frequent- ly after the symptoms disappear the patient experiences great relief, fecling better than for a long time previously. Thus far what has been condensed from Dr. Wood's great book relates to the more frequent forms of hysteria, but Dr. Nebinger refers specially to what Professor Wood says of the particular form exhibited in Mr. Schrack’s case. “ Another form of the paroxysm is that of quiet coma (that is a condition like sleep, but which is not sleepj—the patient lies perfectly motionless, with the eyes closed a ently Without con- sciousness, and incapable of being roused UG wich te patient sebmns rks quite ea dl ient seems uite in: ble, ‘The tion ie “S called “ trance ;” and it contains a warning against concluding that @ patient is dead because there is.a sem! of death, unlessa competent medical man has said that death has actually occurred.—[ Phila, Ledger, January %, 6 the + ; must have been frightened off, as some in | Baikany sce GEORGETOWN.
