PIRST MEETING YESTERDAY. A large number of people assembled at Lin - celn Hall yesterday afternoon, filling the hall to overflowing, to hear the opening temperance address of Francis Murphy. Many persons who arrived late were disappointed in procur- ing seats. The large choir improvised for the oecasion, under the leadership of Prof. B. Bur- lew, was seated on the platform, and rendered appropriate music from time to time. The audience appeased to be composed largely of temperance people, as almost every one pres- ent wore the blue or red ribbon. | Hon. R. A. Hatcher, of Missouri, was an- | R. nounced as chairman of the meeting, and after reading of the Seriptures, prayer and singing, Mr. Murphy was introduced and greeted with great applause, and when the confusion of greeting was over, the speaker delivered an address, (ocenpying about an hour), in the language and style for which he is so noted, during whieh time he kept the undivided at- | tention of the audience. At the close of his | remarks, a gentleman member of Chrystal | Fount Division S. of T., presented him in be- | half of that division with a handsome floral offering. The printed pledge, on cards, on each of | which is Mr. Murphy's autograph, was then | introduced, and several persons’ took this pledge publicly. He fell into a deep sieep at once, and never regained consciousness, bnt died at | the hour named. The news of his sudden death feis like a shock unpon his many friends. Mr. Van Buskirk was botn October 3, 1834, in Lansingburg, N.Y. In ea Wy life he was’ in business in Cincinnati and Towa. During the war he was a paymaster for New York state troops, and then a clerk in the Quartermaster- held to the day of his death. He leaves a wife and one in good circumstances. During the morning del- egations arrived from various places, the U: formed Patriarehs of Baltimore, numbering about 60, reaching the hall about 11 o'clock.
