The Maryland Senatorship. The most astute political manager in the State of Maryland to-day is young Mr. A. P. Gorman, president of the Baltimore and Ohio Canal Company, and when it leaked out that Mr. Gorman was backing ex-Go nor James B. Groome for the U enatorship, in place of Senator Dennis, the ciated that there was trouble ahead for the other candidates. This belief was strength- ened when it was found that Gorman’s candi- date for Police Commissioner, Milroy, had routed the present incumbent, Harry Gilmor, with great slaughter. The success of Milroy Was a great surprise to the Gilmor men, who had counted upon his re-election as a matter admitting of no question, and the apparently well-grounded suspicion is now eute: that the deposition of Gilmor is part of a com- prehensive scheme engineered by Gorman, embracing the disposition not only of the Po- lice Commissionership, but the two U. S. Sena- torships, and the gubernatorial nomination at the next election. According tothe indi tions, this seheme proposes the election of Groome in place of Senator Dennis, and Gor- man in place ot ator Whyte. when the place of the latter becomes vacant ; while Hon. Hen- Archer, of Hartford county, is to be ext Governor of Maryland. The term of Mr. Dennis expires Mareh 3, 1879, and that of Mr. Whyte, March 3, 1881; so it willIbe some time before the programme can be fully carried out, but Mr. Gorman isa young man, and can— “Still achieving, still pursuing, Learn te labor, and to wait."* ——— see —____ The Russian troops having obtained entry through the Balkans are pouring into Roume- lia. Thousands of fugitives are arriving at Constantinople, and the most extreme distress preva The fortifications about the city, the last Turkish line of defence, are said to be at present unfitted to repel a sustained assault, though they are capable, when strengthened and well manned, of making vigorous resistance. Within the city intense misery and terror and indignation against jand, who it thought, has pro- longed the struggle by encouraging Turkey to hope for assistance, only to desert her at the perilous crisis, characterize the mental condi- tion of the people. Meanwhile Russia evades an armistice, and presses her forces steadily and rapidly towards the devoted city. The Moslem sway over European soil will soon be confined to a few seattered fortresses and a ngle great city. But the latter will hardly fall into Russians hands without precipitating a general coll 1 the interested powers, whieh will shake Europe and the world. Wall street seems to feel assured beyond peradventure that the silver bill will not pass the Senate, or that if it should that it will be vetoed by the President. On the strength of this assurance gold fell on Saturday to 102%, the lowest point reached since 1862. The best information in Washington, however, is to the effect that the silver bill, with some modifica- tion, will certainly pass the Senate, and those who should know declare that the Presi- dent will sign any bill that does not flagrantly violate the public credit. The indications in- crease that a majority of the people of the country favor the remonetization of silver in some form, and the President will probably not feel disposed to place himself in opposi- tion to that will if it can be respected without positive violation of the national faith. The strike of the Crispins at Lynn, if wisdom be not employed in its treatment, may result in Serious dificulti The manufacturers and the Crispins are equally firm in their determi. Nation not to yield. So far the latter have only refused to work at the wages offered by the former, and are acting within the law; but it is only a step farther for the strikers, num- bering between two and three thousand, to violently prevent others from working on the terms that they have refused. However great the provocation « [ the strikers to such a course, the state authorities would be bound to sup- press the movement with a stronghand. If violent opposition to law and the legal author- ities once gains headway, the movement would spread like flame over the United States, mad- dening the thousands of workingmen who do not know where to turn for bread. And where is the prophet who will predict the results of such an uprisin; A hervic patience must characterize every true American laborer of the present. The lawless forces which he is tempted to evoke in his defence will recoil upon him in their hurtful results and only in- crease his wretchedness. According to the Boston counts from some of the manu in New England are to the effect that times are growing better. One swallow does not make a summer, to be sure, but the sight of one of them is a pleasant thing after a long, cold winter.
