De of Victor Emanuel. A cable dispateh announces the death of Victor Emanuel, King of Italy. He was born in Turin, in March, 1820, and was consequently about fifty-eight years old. He was distin- guished by his personal valor, and through the statesmanship of Cavour, and his own fighting qualities, his reign will be a conspicuous fea- ture in history By his Anglo-French alliance states, and this reputation was increased by the issue of the war of Italian independence fought by Sardinia and France against Aus- tria. In 1871 Victor Emanuel transferred his official residence to Rome. The twenty-fifth anniversary of his reign was celebrated with great solemnity in 1874, it will be remembered. i Nothing In It. Notwithstanding the amount of project for reopening the presidential question we doubt if there is much in it. It was given out with great positiveness that Gen. Butler was to engineer a resolution of investigation in the House concerning corrupt bargains af- fecting the electoral vote, but he is outin a card making an unqualified denial of the re- port. He declares further that no person has communicated tohim, nor has he communi- eated to anybody anything in re: Ik about a bout it ven stated in the sam that Mr, Conkling is to take th this investigat positive way leadership of ement inthe Senate, but twill not be many hours be- fore Senator C. is heard from in a denial quite as pointed as that made by Gen. The Sun declares that the genera! drift of democratic feeling and opin- ion is against reopening the presidential ques- sion. The Gazette says that Mr. Blair's me- morial does not present the on! id rea- son for demanding a reopening of the electo- ral question, which is that the electoral vote was falsified, but that “unfortunately it is burdened with the reiteration of stale ru- mors, whieh, whether they are true or not, cannot t the real question at issue, and with Mr. Blair's personal ‘inferences,’ whi: are as ridiculous as they are unfounded.” The American says that Judge Blai ght as well try his hand as a resurreetionist over the material grave of Greeley as over the politica! grave of Tilden. We have no idea, however, that Mr. Blair really expects to eject Mr. Hayes from the presidentialchair. He was an original Tilden man, and doubtless he is mak- ing this move to keep Tilden in front as the democratic candidate in 188).
