THE EVENING STAR. | aT ASHINGTON | ¥. N 17,500—being more then three times that of any other daily paper in Washington, | ‘¢ than that oj «ll the othersadded | Our double-sheet for Saturday will be an | exceptionally interesting number, and as usual, with these Issues, a very large edition will be required to supply the demand. We ‘oust again remind our advertisers who wish to avail themselves of the advantages of @ place in the double sheet to send in their advertisements as early as possible. —+e2—_____ Death im the City Wells. The relation of typhoid fever to contami- nated well water, which has been already referred to in this column, is being thor- Oughly investigated by the board of health of Rochester, N. Y. Discovering last sum- mer that some forty persons had contracted typhoid fever and other kindred diseases from a single well, the board requested the physicians of the city to report all cases of this fever to them. The numerous cases of which knowledge was thus gained were ex- amined by the sanitary inspectors, and the relation of the water which was used, to cess- pools, sewers and privy vaults, was no- ticed. Water from the suspected wells, on examination by Professor Lattimore, of Rochester University, was found to contain salt in large quantites, and the Professor, in his report on the subject, clairas that the amount of this con stituent in well-water may be relied upon as & test of its purity. He argues that as nearly ail the salt used for domestic purposes es- capes either through the water closet or the house drain, sewage might be expected to contain a large amount of salt, and analysis Proves this to be the case. As the sewage works its way through a porous soll or through crevices of the rock, it carries the salt with it, and the presence of more than a few grains to the gallon in any well is a saf- fielent evidence of the vitiated character of its water. If his views be currect, a test capable of the most exact determination has been discovered, which, if properly turned to account, will be of great usefulness in the Protection of communities against the evils Of contaminated water. Ex-Secretary Fish has promptly res; e to the request of Edw: L. Pierce, of Massa- e the treaties | Which Senator Sumner had delayet to rep tothe Senate. Mr. Fish gives, with spa cations, the list of no less than nine t which bad been transmitted to the for its action, and referred b.- that boly to the com™ e on foreign relations while ner was its chairman, and which enacted upon when he ceased to be such chairman. Sumner’s appointment as | chairman of the committee oa foreign rela- | tions expired on the 4th of Mares, 1871. His of W28 appointed on or 2%ont March | It is observed by Mr. Fish that one Ine treaties had be ee nearly on referred to the fifteen months before the expiration of Sumner's service as its chatr- man, and that eight of them were acted upon and approved within three weeks after the appointment of his successor. ‘The fact is that Mr. Sumner, whilea schol arly mrananda hard worker in the line of | | | comm | | | | some special «)uestions or hob»ies, had not a | | | g00d business head or any creat capacity for the ordinary run of committee work. He knew as little, practically, about business details as about art matters; though in the latter particular he was flatiered by the pic- ture dealers into the belief that he was an expert, and the result was that he acquired a collection of the most astopisuing rubbish imaginable. . oe It is now settled by the latest data received by the Mark Lane Erpress that the shortness of the English wheat crop will call for a jarge importation into Great Britain from the United States, and will place the fixing Of prices in the hands of this country. Eng- Jand requires nearly 190,000,000 bushels of Wheat in addition to that estimated as pro- duced this year in her own dominions. This large amount she wil! mostly draw from us; only an inconsiderable quantity com! from India and other countries. Amer. has now completely resumed ter oli premacy as the great wheat protucer of world. | The so called petrified man, with a tail, | from Colorado proves to be a second edition | with variations of the Cardiff giant. He is composed of dark-colored limestone. The presence of seams iu his body indicating stratification, and the abseuce from his sur- face of acute angles, and of ail furrows except such as could be made with a blunt instrument, are thought to completely dise Prove the ciaim that be |s a pstrifaction. | Peculiarities in his anatomical structure al- together refute the theory that he comes down to us from remote agcs; and in all proba- bility be has assumed his present form at Some time within the last two or three year: and his ingenious artificer is now perhaps | ehuekling inwardly at the deception which | he is practising on the gullible 1th century. — The death of Senator Morton, which is now shortly expected, will still farther reduce th: small republican majority in the Senate. When bis democratic successor is installed, the Senate Will stand, counting Senator Da- Vid Davis as a republican—republicans, 39; democrats, 34; with three vacancies to fill Counting Senator David Davi a demo- rat, and giving the vacancies in Louisiana and South Carolina to the democrais, (though it is doubtful whether the committee on priv- | ileges ard elections will be so genereus,) the Senate would be equally divided, and the ‘Vice President would have the casting vote. —o-- An exchange says that a building assecta- tion has been formed in Mec! ssburg, Pa., With a membership of only five persons, namely, a lumber dealer, a brick maker, a carpenier, a mason, and a plasterer.
