According tothe New Yor World the Khe- dive of Egypt bas signified his willingness to present to this country, or to the city of New York upon a proper a a being made to him, the nobleobetisk seve: in height, which now stands ‘“solit alone” near the railway sta 2 of Ramlet, at Alexandria, its companion having been accepted by England, and provision made | for its transportation 7 by a publ Spirited Scottish gentleman. It is farther stated that the enterprising contra s who are now conveying the English obelisk to its | destination are prepared to agres to bring the companion monolith from Egypt to Amer- jea, and to erect tt in any sile which may be selected for It at @ price not exceeding $100.4, the whole risk of the enterprise be- ing ta them against a deposit of the | sum sgreed on In the har ing American banker. Thovzh the Work! spesks ft as one tobe rate t fork, it world seem that the Khecive has tu view tion to the country and not to any particular city, arc in that ease it should come to the Nations] Capital. No doubt Congress would appropriate the money requisite to secure this superb historic monument. ore ____ ‘The greater portion of the large eight-page Neweastle Chronicle of Sept. 4 is filled with the description of the reception Gen. Grant at that place by the working people of Northern England. Eighty thon- sand people were out to welcome him, and a curious feature of the procession was the Sections in which the delegations from the different collieries appeared with marshals, banners and mottoes. The various trade unions were ont in great strength, and the devices and inscriptions upon their banners were quite felicitous and appropriate. The Tanners (in recognition of Gen. Grant as a comrade) carried a banner cribed, “«Wel- come back, General Grant, from Arms to Arts,” “ Let us have peace”; in their line were carrie! seven bannerets of dressed | leather, seaiskin, sheep and calf of various | colors, and at the end of the procession was a banneret bearing im bold letters the words “« Nothing like Leather.” The wood-workers bad some striking devices. Among them ‘was a wooden pennon with the motto cut throngh most skilifally. This was followed by a banner of wood cut to exquisite fine- bess and bearing a beautiful device com- pounded of the royal crown of England, the English and American flags, and an appro- priate inscription of welcome to Gen. Grant. The wood-moulders bad a device thatclicited general admiration. It was made up of fiuely cut shavings of wood in the form of a ban- ner, and with mahogany cuttings arranged in the center to form the words in relief “Tyneside rejoices to see thee” and “ Wel- come, Hero of Freedom.” The joiaers car- yied beautiful models of their wor’: inseribed “American timber a Machinery.” The painters banners in exquisite good taste w ferns srranged appropriate! the designs and devices for the ban this procession seem to haye been q Yond the usual stereotype features of such affairs. At Newcastle, as elsewhere in Eng- Jand, Gen. Grant seems to have found im- mense favor on account of his Great-Britain ous face and figure. The Neweastle paper says of bis reception:—“ Looking as much like an ordinary Tyneside skipper as possi- ble, open-browed, firm-faced, binff, honest and unassuming, everybody at once settled in his own mind that the General would do. The cheers became warmer and warmer as that quiet, strong, thoroughly British face grew opon them; and as they increased General Grant, who had at first merely touched bis hat tothe multitude, bared his head, as an unmistakable everybody-joins- in-it “burrah” reared out from fifty thousand Ubroats and rattled up to the astonished birds circling overhead. r It is reported that Gen. Butler is at present suffering severely from a malarial atiack caused by the defective drainage of Balti- more and a cesspool said to be lying under Barnnm’s Hotel, in that city, where he was staying during the trial of some importa, suits recently litigated there, in which ho ‘was employed as counsel. T! comings of the comprebensi vi provements in Washington apparent every day. be conceted that Mr. Theodore is to be appointed collector of the ‘w York, and that Mr. Artuur, the t, 1s to be appSinted to a | recognition. ag is said, of nary become 10: virtually removed.
