This work is now 80 far advanced thal the necessity for the increased force no longer exists. No GoyERNMENT GoLD SALES IN OcTo- BER.—The Secretary of the Treasury gives notice that ,he will not sell gold during the month of October, as has heretofore been done for the purpose of reducing replacing legal tender notes retired on account of the issue of pew national bank notes, but will retire legal tender notes from the current bal- ance in the Treasury, which is ample for that purpose, THE New Beer STAMPS.—The Commis- missioner of Internal Revenue having ap- proved the design for the new stamps for beer kegs, barrels, hogsheads, &c., the Bureau of Engraving and Printing have commenced upon them, and reqaisi- on for them can be met after Octobert Ist. Bureau of Engraving and Printing PAYMENT BY PIECE AND NOT DAY’S WORK. Secretary Sherman to-day approved the following letter submitted to him oa the 28th inst. by Hon. Edward McPherson, chief of bureau of engraving and printing: “The grading of pay made for the bureau in your letter of 3istof July, did not affect the pay of the great mass of female employes. Their pay remained at $1.50 per day, as il existed on the Ist of May, when I took charge. soon after putting in operation the rules es- tablished by you at that time, and especially the one locating the grade number-d three, known as “experts,” it becameappareat from 5 of the daily reports of work es, that the system of an y per diem’ standard worked essen- injustice as between employes. An ob. servation of two months bas convinced all concerned in the organization and man- agement of the bureau that a change from payment by the day to payment by the piece would be essentially just, would tend to dil- ligernce acd promote the efficiency of the force. The problem has been toestablish a rate in the various divisions which woald enable those doing a good day’s work to earn $1.50 per day.
