EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: FRIDAY September 28, 1877. So CROSBY 5. NOYES.......Editor. Average sworn Daily Circulation over 17,500—being more than three times that of any other daily payer in Washington, and more than that of all the others added together. To C ents. i All letters intended for publication, or referring tn ‘any way to the editorial department of the paper should be addressed to The Enttor of The Star. Those Felacing to Its business departments should be ad- ! Gressed to The Publosher of The = Observance Of these directions. in f aire ch letters, | in either ‘an individual name, will prevent provoking delays. Checks, ete., in payment of bills shovid in all cases | bemade payable to the order of The Evenine Star Newspaper Company,—not to that of any individual. | 87” No anonymous communications read. Bo re- | ected communications returned. Members of Congress and others who have business in Washington are coming to the | city by every train and are on the lookout for quarters for the session. A large propor- tion of them seem inclined to take rooms and board rather than to goto the hotels, conse- quently those who have eligible rooms or can supply satisfactory board should make known the fact through the advertising columns of THE STAR. ——__- «+e -—____ Those who have listened to or read the speeches of the Sloux chiefs at the Grand Couscil at the Executive Mansion cannot but confess that their requests are reason- able. They ask to be allowed to remain where they are, or, if they must be moved, they very naturally want to go to a well- wooled, well-watered region where the soll is susceptible of cultivation. It is certainly encouraging to hear them express a desire fo learn the habits of civilized life and ask the government to aid them to do so. It is therefore not to be wondered at that they should find stout eham- pions in Gen. Crook and Mr. William Welsh, and that the public seatiment in fact should demand that their request be favor- ably considered. Gen. Crook, from long practical experience, knows the cost of fight- ing the Indians, and ts convinced that it Is much better to conciliate them than to incur their hostility. He believes ft would be better for them to select their ature homes, and is of the opinion that !{ would cost ten times more to force them to remainon the Missouri river than it would to feed them on a reservation of their own selection, and his judgment should out-welgh that of the theorists un- versed in Indian affairs. patna — The republicans are much more hopeful of carrying Ohio than they were a week ago. The registry law will, they claim, gain them 20,000 votes this year because of its cutting off outsiders who have heretofore voted in Obio; and from the fact that the republicans have registered more generally than the demcerats. Also, it is said that a serious disaffection of foreign-born voters has broken out against Bishop, thedemocratie candidate for governor, on account of his Know-Noth- ing record. On this ground the Jrish Vindi- cater, an influential paper published at Cin- cinnati, will come out strongly for West, and denounce scons Senator Conkling must be convinced by this time that even if he did have 295 out of 404 delegates at nis back In the New York convention: his course has met with the dis- approval ofa majority of the thinking men of his party. The republicans, says the New York Tritwne. will give their earnest, unfal- tering support to the nominees of Mr. Conk- ling’s convention, but they will have it un- derstood, at the same time, that they are not hostile to the President of their choice, even though they may not believe that the wis- dom of bis actions has always kept pace with the purity of his purposes. The New York Times goes so far in its report of the convention as to stigmatize his conduct at Rochester as that of a brutal bully. Editori- lly st depreeates Conkling’s course, and Says if the republicans are successfal in this coming election, it will be due to the aggres- sive energy and honesty of purpose which are still to be found In the ranks of the party, and not at all to theability, earnestness, or political tact of the party leaders. The New York Evening Post says that whatever the re sult may be, no self-respecting republican who has any pride in the past of bis party or any hope for its future, will fail to make known everywhere and at all times that between Thomas C. Platt and Rosece ¢ lng and President Hayes, he adheres to the President. —_____.---—_____ The late news from the seat of war tndi- cates that while the Turks are not gaining any new victories, they are fairly holding their own, and that at any rate they will be able to hold the Russians in cheek until the rainy Season comes in to puta stop to the fighting this season. There is some question, bowever, whether the Turkish army will not suffer more from the inclemency of the Weather in wintering in Bulgaria than the Russians, who are more inured to severe cold. The main difficulty with the Russians Will be to keep up their line of communica- tion over the Danube during the winter, and to provision their troops at such a distance from kome. Senator Conover, of Florida, wants to be n angel and with the angels stand—that is to say he wants to make his political salva- ton in Florida sure, by acting with thedem- Ocrats in the Senate henceforth. This will make the republican majority in the Senate ‘Still more shaky. oo At a public meeting the other pight in New York Hon. John Morrissey made the boast that, while there were some acts in his life which he regretted, he never stole public money. Come to think of it, wedon’t know | that the honorable Jobn ever was accused of thiscrime. His career as a stateand na- slator has always been of a nega- aracter, but in private life the same cannot be said of his course, which has been positively striking. There are many who Would be willing to condone his past irreg- ularities of life if he would only show a dise | position to discontinue practicing them.
