Vermont bas just finished celebrating the anniversary Of a battle which actually took place on the soll of New York, and was enabled todo so in a creditable way through liberal public appropriations made by herself and the Sister states of New Hampshire and Massa- ehusetis. New York asa state has made no provision to celebrate the anniversary of Burgos ne’s surrender, and if it is to be com- memorated it must be done through the exertions of private citizens. The Saratoga Monument Association is trying to raise £5,000 for the purpose by private subscrip- tion, but thus far has obtained but <5). The great state of New York cannot afford to allow so important an anniversary to pass Without a proper observance, and her pa- triotic and wealthy citizens will doubtless put their bands in their pockets and raise the necessary amount of fands in time to have a rousing celebration. ————_-eee- A local mention in yesterday's issue, enti- ted, ‘Fashion aiding the thieves,” should convey a hint to ladies In regard to carrying their purses. The practice of carrying the purte in little outside pockets is a dangerous one. Every careful woman when shopping or marketing should carry it out of sight in her pocket or firmly clasped in her hand. Poeket- book snatehing is of frequent occur- rence in ali cities, but it would not be If the Jadies exercise! more care in carrying their purses. —— + In this country, where, while it may pot be in good taste. it is allowable to call our Chief Executive a horse thief and other pet Dames, it surprises the average American to See for what comparatively slight offences newspapers are suppressed or their editors fined and imprisoned in France. The fol- Jowing paragraph cost the manager of the Mot Ordre newspaper two months’ impris- o&ment and $1,%0 fine: “Mr. McMahon (whodescends from a mere Spothecary) having arrived from the British sles at Autun to seek his fortune, dexter- ously allowed the rumor to be circulated, Without ever contradicting it, that his ances: tors occupied the tbrone of Ireland. This is what is calied a libelous paragraph in the French “Republic.” How would such @construction of law work in this country? That we are a nation of letter writers is shown by the statement that during the fiscal year which ended June 30th last the total pumber of postage stamps of all kinds and denominations, stamped envelopes and newspaper wrappers issued by the Post Office department was 1,06,253,009, the value of Which was $26,525,506.47. Besides this over 100,000,000 postal cards were sold. Housekeepers and others interested doubt- Jess read the remarks of the judge of our Po- lice Court, yesterday, in the case of a person charged with using false measures, with a Breatdeal of satisfaction. The strong con- dempation of the use of such measures by the judge, and his expressed intention of dealing rigorously with all offenders here- after, ought to have the effect of deterring unscrupulous parties from continuing the Practice. No mercy should be shown to petty pilferers of this kind, who ought to be com- Plaine? of to the proper authorities whenever an opportunity offers. Bountiful crops, as a rule, are reported from all sections of the country. The whea* and corn crops will be especially large. The Cotton crop, just being closed out, is said to have amounted to 3,976,000 bales, or within 139,000 bales of the largest recent crop, that of 1876, —_ere-—____. In its results the famine in India has @iready proved more disastrous to human life than'the war between Turkey and Rus- Bia so far. Over 500,000 persons have died already, and at last accounts 1,500,090 were being fed. The famine of 1513-74, which de- stroyed one and a half million of lives, eost the Indian government $30,000,000. The pre- Bent famine, according to all accounts, threatens to be even more disastrous than that of the years named, since it extends over ® much larger area, inhabited by nearly 27,000,000 souls, or more than twice the Ppopu- lation threatened by the famine of 1573. ——_<+e-___ We shall be surprised if Postmaster Gen- eral Key is not taken to task by some of his democratic friends in the south for alluding 10 the Southern people in one of his speeches at Bennington, yesterday, as ““Erring south- ern brethre: —__—_--+e-___ The New York street car companies are engaged in breaking up a conspiracy by which a namber of conductors were “beat. ing” the companies out of a large number of fares daily. The swindling was done by changing the combination of the bell-punch, @ trick for which each conductor was requir- ed to pay a “royalty” of five dollars per Week, which went to the ingenious knave Who discovered it and acted as instructor. ‘The conductors had been operating but two or three weeks when the conspiracy was un. earthed. Suppose no names had been given in con- nection with the two Bennington centennial poems publishedtin yesterday’s STAR, what Would have been the public judgment as to the relative merits of the t forts? —_-+e-___ The drowning of two more bathers at the Seashore within a few days leads the Phila- delphia Leviger to remark that there is noth- ing impracticabie in the adoption of protec- tions and guards, so often suggested, except the refusal of those interested in seashore Property to spend the money necessary for protection. The only attractions these places possess are their bathing and their invig- Orating air, the chief attraction being the bathing. This, beyond all question, should be made as safe as it is possible for life Pro- tections to make it. bee el as The Cumberland 7imes is in favor of Mr. ‘Vice President Keyser for presiient of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company in the event of @ change in its management ‘which now seems likely at no distant day’ he Times says that Mr. K. has in more than Shinks he would be not only the most popu- Jar but also the most useful and efficient aanager that could be found. ‘TaE WEEKLY STAz, now ready, contains News of the Week; Political N Still Further Reductions.
