Vermont bas just finished celebrating the anniversary Of a battle which actually took place on the soll of New York, and was enabled todo so in a creditable way through liberal public appropriations made by herself and the Sister states of New Hampshire and Massa- ehusetis. New York asa state has made no provision to celebrate the anniversary of Burgos ne’s surrender, and if it is to be com- memorated it must be done through the exertions of private citizens. The Saratoga Monument Association is trying to raise £5,000 for the purpose by private subscrip- tion, but thus far has obtained but <5). The great state of New York cannot afford to allow so important an anniversary to pass Without a proper observance, and her pa- triotic and wealthy citizens will doubtless put their bands in their pockets and raise the necessary amount of fands in time to have a rousing celebration. ————_-eee- A local mention in yesterday's issue, enti- ted, ‘Fashion aiding the thieves,” should convey a hint to ladies In regard to carrying their purses. The practice of carrying the purte in little outside pockets is a dangerous one. Every careful woman when shopping or marketing should carry it out of sight in her pocket or firmly clasped in her hand. In its results the famine in India has @iready proved more disastrous to human life than'the war between Turkey and Rus- Bia so far. Over 500,000 persons have died already, and at last accounts 1,500,090 were being fed. The famine of 1513-74, which de- stroyed one and a half million of lives, eost the Indian government $30,000,000. The pre- Bent famine, according to all accounts, threatens to be even more disastrous than that of the years named, since it extends over ® much larger area, inhabited by nearly 27,000,000 souls, or more than twice the Ppopu- lation threatened by the famine of 1573. ——_<+e-___ We shall be surprised if Postmaster Gen- eral Key is not taken to task by some of his democratic friends in the south for alluding 10 the Southern people in one of his speeches at Bennington, yesterday, as ““Erring south- ern brethre: —__—_--+e-___ The New York street car companies are engaged in breaking up a conspiracy by which a namber of conductors were “beat. ing” the companies out of a large number of fares daily. The swindling was done by changing the combination of the bell-punch, @ trick for which each conductor was requir- ed to pay a “royalty” of five dollars per Week, which went to the ingenious knave Who discovered it and acted as instructor. ‘The conductors had been operating but two or three weeks when the conspiracy was un. earthed.
