Beall, to be on fire, and turned in an ajarm from box 127, which brought out the fire department, and they extingnishe! the flames. There is no doubt that the fire ‘Was the work of an incendiary, as there vas every aprearance of the stairway on the | lower story having been seton fire, and the flames worked through to the upper story and roof. The report of the register of vital statistics for the month of May was read, showing the notober of deaths at 27, eight more than the correspond 'g month of last year, or at the rate Of 21.525 per 1,000 por annum. Decrease of the population by deaths over births (re- ported) was 13, or the rate of .975 per 1.000 per annum. Rate of the mortality of the white Population was W069 per annum, while the mortality of the colored population was 35.466 per 1.000 for the same period. Number of births reported during the month was 300— white, 1%. colored, MS. Rate of decrease of the white population by deaths over births (reported) Was 31> per 1,600 per annum, walle the increase of the colored population by births (reported) over deaths was 236 per 1.00 per annom.
