Immediately upon the receipt of the telegram Secretary Me- Crary proceeded to the White Hoase and sobmitted it to the President. They considered the subject sometime. and deetted that the requisition of Governor Matthews did not co:tain enough informa- on regarding the situation of affairs to warrant the calling out of U.S. troops. The ry of War was instructed, however, graph immediately to Governor Mat- thews asking for full and explicit informa- lion, and after its receipt some immediate and definite action will be taken. E oS SS of Washi LETTER FROM CAPE MAY. [Correspondence of The Star.} Carr May, July 16. There are seasons—and seasons at allof the summer resorts this year. They differ from former ones just as “the times change and men change with them.” Last year the Cape May scason touched the highest point of suc cess in the Centennial wave of travel. That there should be a reflex this year is as evi- dent as the ebb that follows the flood-tide along these glistening miles of sand. The simost unprecedented cool weather of mid summer and the business depression have made the seaton a late one until within the last few days, when the hotels commenced to fillup. There is now a good prospect of a fairly prosperous time im the rematoing weeks. The “cottage season” was a success long ago. Before the first of this month about eveTy cottage on the island was occupied With the marked reduction in rents, ove- half in many instaners, and in the cost of living otherwise, families bave fouod it much cheaper to occupy a cottage than to go to the hotels. In some of the larger cottages two and even three families live with comfort and even # quiet that cannot be had amid the clatter of the botel piazzas. But for those Who are fond ¢f a ronnd of enjoy morning afterncon concerts of the bands ar ning hops at the ho: tels are tiractive this year especially 1, and [ notice that the by hundreds to ers secure a goodly share of it. This hotel has Bernstein’s band, whieh has been so well known for the past eight seasons in Saratoga, and which is one of Lhe be ‘a the coantry. In & great measure the hops are more largely attended tian for several summers al least, on account of the excellence of the m: room is always in charge of Prof. vomis that contributes to the pleasure of all ent. Heretofore a large number have mere lookers-on, but now all are invited ning there was a very sue-essful german, with one or two new figur which were warmly approved in rounds’ of applause from ihe ladies who attended. IM yEMENTS MADE. There have been some changes for the bet- ter since last season The drive and waik along the beach ‘the boulevanl” the Cape May papers call it—has been repaired and improved where the ocean washed it oat last winter; the pier which the waves ‘took in” last September has been replacet with anew one. beyond the breakers; several new and handsome cottages, on the ocean front, ha e been built, and the place appears to’ have improved in other quarters. As for the beach itself and the bath be nothing new can be have been gool, and ays will be. Although the vere last winter, they did not eut up the sai into bars, but left the beach as smooth and compact ‘as ever. From Cape May light- house to the first life-saving statics, quite four miles away. I walked oa Saturday, at ebb tide, fully four handred feet from the shore, on sand as hard as some of your Washington concrete pavements—and hard- er than some of them—and there was not a Spot in the distance where the driving anid bathing were not excellent. Within the past tied days the tide has been on the flood at the thing hours, from 11 to 1 o'clock, an’ the almost tepid billows have been lined from the Sea Breeze to the Stockton with bathers enjoying the “Cape May ripples” that come roaring in, bursting over their heads. lifting them off of Meir feet, and sending them all sprawling Into the sea foam, ouly to rise again for another plunge through or over the breakers. THE SEASON having opened late will probably be pro- tract'd into September. Congress Hall does hol think of closing till the 5th of Septem- ber. On the 26th of August the governors of the southern and eastern states meat here, ard with other attractions in conte nplation wll make the last of tae season b+tter Wan the first. REDUCTION IN PRICES. There has been some retuc:ioa in the ho'el rates, and good terms can be made for the season. Inducemenis to single gentlemen, who are in great demand, are also held ont more liberally than formerly.
