EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: SATURDAY. scoe+-ere+- Same 30, 1877. ROSBY 8S. NOYES.......Editor. Reading Matter on Every Page. Average sworn Daily Circulation over 17,500,—veing more than three times that of any other daily paper in Wash- ington, and more than that of all the others added together. The Indian War. Probably by this time a decisive battle has oceurred between the federal troops under General O. O. Howard and the united nd of Indians, who, according toa tele- gram from General H.,dated the 2th inst., were posted at the mouth of White Bird creek, in Idaho. Although no definite esti- mate of the number of hostile Indians has been given, It is believed that their force far outrumbers that of General Howard’s, the latter's force being less than 500 men. Con- siderable apprebension is felt as to the result ofa collision. General Howard states that the Indians are bold and are waiting to engage bim, and that they are strongly posted. The Nez Perces, it is stated, are gen- erally peaceful. cultivate farms, and are a Weil todo-people. Some of the tribe, how- ever, are wild Indians under the religious control of one Smoholla, “the Dreamer,’ who for years bas inveighed against the whites and their castoms. “The Dreamer,” who professes to receive revelations from the Great Spirit, exerts a* powerful influence over the wild Indians, and hasdone much towards bringing about the present war. General Howard, while an experienced and & brave soldier, who commanded a corps during the late civil war, bas had but com- paratively little experience as an Indian fighter. His enemy is wellarmed, confident, and “spoiling for a fight,” and the news of the frst general engagement will be waited for with the greatest interest. It is to be hoped that the result will not demonstrate the painful fact that the government far- nished General Howard with an inadequate foree, but nevertheless there is room for grave apprehension on that score, and the mind instinctively reverts to the terrible massacre of Custer and his brave mea in the valley of the Little Big Horn. - te]e- E-x-Senator Simon Cameron and his clan are repreented as being greatly dissatisfied With the President’s late order, and say boldly that they intend to let Pernsyivania go democratic at the coming election a7 a rebuke to the administration. This is aqueer way of taking revenge. -<ee-—_ We would like an explanation of the reason why thirty-six bours should elapse before a drop-letier, duly stamped and properly ad- dressed, and placed in a lamp letter-box, is delivered. We know of a case where such a letter was dropped into a box night before last, and yet itdid not reaeh its destination until this morning. While this letter was quietly reposing in the box or at the post- Office, within five squares of its destination, at least two mails were received from the city of New York and other distant points. ‘That there is neglect somewhere is evident. ———————<ee-______ At this distance from 1580 it is about as impossible to tell what will be the political issues of the next Presidential campaign as it is w know what our angelic cognomens Will be, provided always, as the lawyers Say, we a@re ever entitled to any. As a national organization neither party has any distinctive vitality. The trouble among the politicians is that they have nothing to wrangle about. The democrats like the policy of the President very well and find no serious fault, while republicans in the main give it a lukewarm support. Referring to the President's late order divorcing federal offices from party machinery, the New York World earnestly asks: “ How is it possible for sincere democrats or sincere believers in the government of the people, for the people, and by the people, to disapprove of such an order’”” The Boston Journal answers some objections to the order in question, and closes by saying that when @ party comes to rely on official help and direction, it rests on a broken reed much more likely to pierce than support it. The board of aldermen of New York has passed, and the mayor has approved an or- dinance giving permission to explode fire- works on the &i and 4th of Jaly. The boara of underwriters formally protested against the bill, and the press of New York pretty generally condemn it. A correspondent of one Of the journals of that city suggests that all underwriters when they issue a fire pol- ley write in it that the company will not be Mable for any loss by fire occurring on the 3d, 4th or 5th of July, the days on which the fatal fireworks are used. This would leave the teity without any pecuniary protection, aud bring the advocates of a fiery celebra- tion of the Fourth to a realizing sense of the danger of using explosives.
