EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: WEDNESDAY. November 29, 1876. | No paper will be issued from this office on | to-morrow, Thanksgiving Day. Why Georgetown Shoald be Consoli- dated with Washington. To constitute an organic whole, of which every part is in vital coherence with the | other, the name of Georgetown should be consolidated with that of Washington. Their natural relations require unity of name as resenting every class of society, commercial, mechanical and professional, just before the late civil war, assembled at Forrest Hall to discuss this matter, and advocated a union with Washington, to all intents and pur- poses. To be absorbed in name, as well as in fact, in the metropolis of the nation, they re- garded as no derogation from their dignity ur their material interests, but, on the contrary, as a deciled advantage in both respects. To adhere, on the ground of sentiment, to a name, significant of nothing, importing no corporate authority, simply a shell—mere form without inward substance, and serving to maintain and keep alive an injurious dis- tinction witbout a difference—was deemed puerile and absurd. The natural division between Georgetown and Washington is a shallow stream spanned by bridges and tra- ‘versed by railroads atevery point of com- munication, and Commissioner Phelps has recently stated that it is part of the plan of future local improvements to arch Rock creek, and, by making the surface of the contiguous soil continuous, obliterate every trace of territorial partition. Georgetown, by keeping the old designa- tion, loses the facility of the free delivery System of post office matter, letters, &c., and is slighted and ignored in manifold direc- tions, solely by reason of the supposed an- tagonisin between the two communities cre- ated by the diversity of names. The opposi- tion of Georgetown to the proposed change of name is assumed, we apprehend, without due preof. = atthdlleromnaasane The District Commissioners have appoint- ed ex-Mayor Emery, Edward Baldwin and George White to fill vacancies in the School Board in the second and fourth districts. ‘These gentlemen are well-known citizens of standing and ability, and their appointment will, we think, be generally aceeptable. Nothing is more common than for politi- cians and partisan newspapers to belittle the District of Columbia and to hold out the idea that the city of Washington has no business and no interests worth considering by the Fest of the country or its legislators; yet the report of the Commissioner of Internal Rev- enue shows that during the last fiscal year, ‘We paid into the national treasury as inter- nal revenue tax the very respectable sum of $114,579.9, which is a greater amount than was paid by either of the States of Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Maine, Mississippi, Ne- vada, Oregon, South Carolina or Vermont, and more than three times as much as was paid by either of the Territories, save and ex- cept Montano alone. We commend these facts to those who look upon this District as a community of drones ant boggars, entirely dependent upon the bounty of Congress. All the District asks is a fair show with the rest of the country in the matter of national legislation —a boon"she has never yet had, all reports and opinions to the contrary not- withstanding. ——— Governor Dennison, it will be seen by the Statement elsewhere, positively denies the report that he has said that the solution of the Presidential question was for Governor Hayes to withdraw, or that fraud was to be used in securing his election. It is reported that on Saturday last five American citizens went from Brownsville, Texas, to Matamoras, Mexico, where they were insulted and assaulted by Mexican of- ficers and then arrested and thrown into prison. On lay morning they were fined from #20 to each, with the alternative of two months hard labor on the public works. It is difficult to believe that this report is not exaggerated. It seems strange that five citi- zens of the United States should thus be mal- treated for no offence whatever, and it is always safer to take such reports cum grano satis. Might it not be possibile that these citi- zens were unduly inflated with bad whisky and got up a row which ended in their arrest? ‘When the whole truth is known it will prob- ably be found that they richly merited the treatment they received at the hands of the authorities. ———<+- —____ In the election of Gen. John T. Morgan as a United States Senator to succeed Senator Goldthwaite whose term of service expires next March, the Senate gains another “ex- confederate,” and a lawyer of local promi- nence. Gen. Morgan was the counsel for the legislature of Alabama last winter in the case of the charges against Senator Spencer of having secured his election by corrupt means. He promises to be a more active member than the present incumbent who has been prevented by ill-health from taking a Prominent part in the proceedings of the Benate. mo SATU!
