EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON _MONDAY. over 1 hree times that of any other yee pee in Washington, and equal that of all the other daily coaiere in the city added together. OUR NEW DRESS. THe STAR, it will be seen, appears to-day In an entirely new dress. The great wear and tear of material consequent upon the high Yate of speed at which our large Hoe press Is riven, in order to meet the wide and con- stantly increasing circulation of the paper, renders these renewals of frequent oeeur- | rence. The great problem to be solved in the publication of such a paper as THE STAR,— that is one that undertakes to give a com- piete reflex of the worll’s doings each ay, and at the lowest price possible,—is to so z«ijost conflicting forces that its daily history shall be not only full and complete, but at the f#ane time be printed as clearly and distinctly as possible. In order to constantly secur: this end frequent renewals and consequently large outlays of money are required: but these demands we cheerfully meet.as 1i is the deter- mination of the proprietors that the paper Shall he at all times and in all ways worthy Of its liberal and growing patronage. Our present new dress, which will appear Yet hand-omer after a few days’ use, is from the firm of Lewis Pelouze & ¢ successors to Lewis Pelouze, deceased, proprietor of the old-established Philadelphia type foundry, Which has supplied new dresses to THE STAR ever since it was started —_ —_-<e-- @ur Defective Electoral System. It is gratifying to notice prominent party Journals pointing out the inequalities and dangers of our present electoral urging a constitutional amendment whereby the people of the United States can vote di- rectly for President and Vice President. The indications now are that, no matter what the result of the late Presidential election may be, popular sentiment will force Congress at its meeting in December to take up the sub- ject in dead earnest and repeal the present obnoxious system. The New York Evening Express recalls the fact that ~ of the abiest Statesmen of the country have been urging the change for fifty years past. In the United tates Senate in 1834, Mr. Calhoun said of the etectore1 system: “It is a departure from the intention of the Constitution, violates the rights of the minorities, and_is attended with many other evils. The rights of minorities are violated because a majority of one will earry the vote of the whole state.” In Con- ress in 1825, Senator Benton and Repre- sentative McDuffie proposed a change, and a committee, consisting of Messrs. Van Buren, Benton, and R. M. Johnson, was appointet to draft a reformatory measure. Senator Mor- ton, at the last session of Congress, urged a Plan substantially copied from their repo wnd it is to be presumed he will bring it for Wan again early in the co: session. Col Forney, of the Philadelpt #3, SEM to be the only politician of prominence who Opposes the abolition college. In a iate York to his paper, he makes the strange assertion that * never has the foresight of the fathers been more proved by experience than in this very system. As it is. it has worked admirably.” How he can say this, in fae? of the imminent peril in which the now placed, solely on account of the vicious elecioral system, is beyond the limits of ordi- Bary comprehension. He goes on to say— “Abolish it. (the electoral system.) and a Single city like New York, male up heaven krows how. would sponge out-such little States as Rhode Island, California, Oregon, Nevada, Delaware, Maine, Connecticut. whenever occasion demanded the opcratio: ‘This single reason is far from being conclu- Bive. One of the fundamental principles of our government is that the majority shall Yule, and a vote by the people directly for President and Vice President would be a Fecognition of this cardinal principle. The Electoral College system ignores it, and, for tbls reason, is antiquated and uorepublican. ‘Bhere should be no party division on this Question. It is not a party question, but one that concerns the welfare of the entire coun- try. of the electoral letter from New —————~<e--___ ‘The editor of the Sunday Herald, im his un- provoked abuse of THE STAR, has now de- seended to the very gutterjof scurrility, and falsehood. There we leave him. We have no time to spend in mud-flinging, and we are | Best Ingrains, $1532 sure our readers have no disposition to see their favorite paper enter upon this kind of business. We have labored untiringly for many years to supply a reputable, ac able newspaper, and the almost exceptional Buecess of THE STAR serves to show that that end has been attained. We do not propose now to be diverted from that work by the disreputable, low-flung attacks of envy and Jealousy. re -__ In reference to the dispatch to the N. Y. During the 158 da: ‘Was open the official returns show that number of paying visitors was %,004 whom was realized the sum of 3, This isa sum $1,002,114 in excess of the re- eeipts at the London exhibition of 1451, and 81,710,08 in excess of those at the Paris ex- position of 1867, the most successful in pecun- dary results of any of the great exhibitions held prior to our own. The sum realized by the London exhibition of 151 was $2,121,610, and at Paris, in 186, $2,105.67. The sum Fealized at the Vienna exhibition of 1573 Was much smaller than that received in Philadelphia. As the matter stands, how- ever, the government cxhibit is to be sold to ‘the highest bidder. ———~<ee. The delay in announcing the result of the Presidential election undoubtedly exercises a @epressing effect upon the business interests Of the country. The president of a New Yori mational bank said to a reporter on Friday ast that everything was very dull, and that there was little apparent reason to hope for Improvement at present. He further ex. Pressed the opinion that this depression Would continue until after the Presidential inauguration. This opinion seemed to b« shared by other lead ing bankers in New York- ‘The breadstuff and cotton markets, however, Show no decline, but are kept buoyant on ac. crisis. e Tae ee eS eee | WANTS.
