In the Criminal Oourt, Judge MacArthur, ‘his morning, the ease of Nimrod Norris, Frederick Harris and Mary Ward, charged with the murder of Riehard Lewis, on the morning of Jaly 4th last, was resumed. Dis- trict Attorney Wells and H. H. Wells, jr., appeared for the government, and Messrs. A.K. Browne and J. H. Cook for Norris; Mr. Newman for Harris, and Mr. Mitcheli for Mary Ward. The jury not having been filled Timothy W. Murphy, Geo. D. Johnson and Wm. Bryan were selected from the talesmen, and they, with the following selected yesterday, constitute THE JURY: Geo. Donaldson, J. ©. Beckett, Jos. 8. Stet- tinius, John P. Crowley, Jas. Nourse, Rob- ert Beall, Walker Lewis, John Rover and John G. Auld. Tv Norris is quite @ small, neat-looking col- ored man, whose age is given at 24, but he looks no! over 15 oF 19, and was attired in a black cloth suit, white shirt, in which are gold studs, and light colored necktie. Har- Tis is @ mulatto, about 30 years of age, with Prominent nose and @ moustache. He was dressed in @ suit of dark biue and white sbirt. The woman is also @ mulatto, rather dark, with & pleas@nt-looking face. She is about 25 years old, and is attired in a checked calico dress, with faded striped — and straw hat bound with biue with @ blac: band. Mr. H. H. Wells, jr., opened the case to the ary. — THE TESTIMONY. Dr.J. FP. Hartigan testified to the wound on the body of Lewis, made as he believed by @ two-edged knife. It was made from above, and was necessarily fatal. George Roane teatified that on the morning of July 4th he saw Norris and others ing down 13% street, when Harris was struck (ashe thought) accidentally by one of the party with @ piece of broomstick, and his nose bled. Harris and his friend went to a pump; while atthe pump Norris came up and made some remark about the ep] and Lewis told him that it was none of his business; Norris called Lewis a and the woman Ward went in her house and brought out @ dirk which she gave to Harris, who handed it to Norris, who pushed Lewis down on bis Knees, and ick him with the Knife in the neck. Le arose, pulled the knife from bis neok, took hold of Norris, still holding the knife in one hand, and Biue came across the street and took the knife from Lewis who fell across the pavement. This witness was cross-examined at con- siderable length by the counsel, and said in reply to the query, Where do you live?” “I don’t live anywhere now. Hughes alias Ryan alias Hinton alias St. the magician, who some weeks ago murdered @ man named Joseph B. Hughes, and cut the throat ofa man named Richard 8. Hook, on Solomon’s Island, Calvert couno- ty. St. Leno, who is @ traveling magician, was on Solomon's Island with @ young mau named Davenport. The latter took a young lady out sailing, and on returning ‘to the island became involved in a difficulty with the girl's lover, and St. Leno went to his as- sistance. After the fracas he accosted Mr. Hook, and asked him why he had not assiat- ed bim in the fight. Hook replied that he thought St. Leno in the wrong in engagin in the Hight, and ought to have been thrashed. St. Leno immediately assaulted Hook and while grappling with him, he planged the biade of @ knife into Hook’s abiomen, and with the same knife he cut Hili severe- ly im the throat. Book died from his wound, and the murderer escaped. v- ernor Carroll offered a re for his capture, but for some time he was not heard of, though Marshal Gray made every effort to discover his whereabouts. He, however, continued the pursuit. A man was arrested 1n Edenton, N, C., on suspicion of being St. Leno, but on being brought to this elty it Was ascertained that he was not the man, Spd be was discharged from custody. Tne Baltimore police authorities ascertained that St- Leno’s wife lived near Lynciburg, Virginia, and informed the police of that elty of the fact. This led to r 26, in that city, by Officers Rocken- back, Wright and Mays. He was committed to jail in that place to await the necessary requisition from Governor Carroll. He wiil be sent to Prince Frederick, Calvert county, to morrow morning. He acknowledges his identity and claims justification for nis ¢rime. The prisoner has been engaged for a Jong time in the show business in Southern Maryland and on the Peninsula, and bas a bad record. He has had several encounters of @ desperate character, and has been con- sidered @ dangerous man.—| Balt. In order that dealers may know how to test this spurious article we subdjoin directions for making a simple test fur water:—Take @ clear glass bottle, fill it With the lard to be tested (leaving out the cork); place this bottle about six inches from the stove or fire, and let tne lard slow- ly melt, being very careful not to get it up to the bolling Ce the water would then ova) te; most of the water will slowly fall to the bottom of the bottle, and the lard now melted will rise to the top. By glancing at the amount of water now ited at the bottom Of the bottle, as compared with the amount of ei] (or lard) above it, you can easily tell about how much water there is in the fraudulent article.
