EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: TUESDAY... jovember 7, 1876. CROSBY BS. NOYES........Eaiter. simply to the“ Eor v Tux Stan” or the Pua.isnER OFTHE Stax,” asthe case may be. When addressed personally they are regarded as private letters, and 1m cases of absence inconvenient delays frequently eccur from that cause. — ‘The New York Heraid, discoursing on the cost of elections in the United States, says that what the expense ts, in s general can ‘vass like that which has just drawn tos close, it is dimBult to estimate with any ap- proach to accuracy, for there are no statis- Ucs extant upon the sunject, and the poll- ticians who plan and conduct campaigns are naturally reticent upon such matters. At any rate the expense must be something enormous. Campaign docaments mast be Printed and distributed; the rental of halis must be paid for as well as the services of stump fpeakers; the telegraph must be free- ly used; bauners, torches, uniforms pur- cebased, &c, &c. A paragraph has iately been going the rounds of tne press to the effect that the strenuous campaign in In- diana preparatory to the recent state elec- tom consumed teu million dollars; but this is probably an exaggeration. The Herald estimates the average cost of a Presidential election at about one million five hundred thousand dollars for each of the great op. posing psrties. or @ total of three million dollars. Accepting this as within the bounds of probability it would seem that the ex. pense of putting Mr. Tilden or Mr. Hayes into the White House is fifteen times greater than the whole amount of salary paid to the incumbent during bis term of four years. Calling the population of the country about forty millions this would be equivalent toa tax of seven and one haif cents a head for every man, woman and child io the United States. The maintevance of the court of France for the frst year of the Second Em- Pire was less than two cents per head of the population. It appears that the cost of making a President may be greater than that of keeping a prince. ——————— For the first time in the political history Of the country, readers of the evening papers are furuisbec on the day of the Presidential election with & report of the weather in every state of the Union—sometimes not an un- important element in such contests. By reference to the weather bulletin in this legue Of THE STAk it will be seen that while it is rainy or cloudy along the Atlantic coast, it is clear and cold in the interior states clear through to the Pacific coast. ‘The projectors of the permanent exhibition movement In Philadelphia speak hopefaily of the prospect. Appiications for space con- tinue to pour in upon the gentlemaa ap- pointed lo receive them, and already aggre- gate cousiderabiy over four hundred. The number includes scores of the larger exhibi- torsin Machinery Hall, Agricuitural Hall, and the Main Building, with a sprinkling of prominent macufacturers of large cities not heretofore represented at the exhibition. Among some of the foreign exhibitors a mere favorable dispositon to co operate appears to be manifest. The financtai prospects of the undertaking are reported to be such as to give reasonable assurance that it will be carried through without delay. A public meeting of the citizens of Philadelphia will soon be held to take final action. The Philadelphians Epow something of @ good thing and want to Know more. The bevefiis of the great show have reached almost every class, and therefore the formal closing is contemplated With keen regret. it is hardly probable that the hopes of the projectors of the permanent exbibition will be fully realized. General interest in the exhibition will doubtless cease with its formal closing, and but few will take the trouble to visit Philadelphia to see tan must necessarily be a fragmentary ————_-cee-—___ "sean aii the New Jer- sey prize Hghters is having an excellent effect. Now let Kentucky give us a specimen of her jus- Uce. ——___-<«--____ Here are a few facts about Presidential ¢lections. Washington and John Adams were elected by electors chosen by state leg- islatures. Thomas Jefferson was elected in 1800 by the House of Representatives over Aaron Burr and John Adams. Jonn Quincy Adams was elected President in the same ‘way in 1824. These are the only two Instances im the histery of the government where Presidents have been elected by the House of Representatives. There have been five “minority Presidents,” so far as the popu- lar vote has been concerned, viz: Joan Quincy Adams, in 1524; James K. Polk, in 184; Zachary Taylor, in 1548; James Bach- @nan, in 1556; and Abraham Lincoln, in 1360. In 1824 there were four candidates in the feld—J. ( Adams, Andrew Jackson, W.H Crawford, and Henry Clay. Adams received 105,521 votes, Jackson 155,572, and the other two candidates combined, about 100,000. In 18H Polk received 1,337,243 against 1,361,362 Votes for Clay. In 1318 Taylor received 1,360,099 against about 1,500,000 for Cass and Van Buren. In 1856 Buchanan received 1,538,169 against 2,215,798 votes east for Fre- mont aod others. In 1360 Lincoln received 1,866 352 sgainst 2,510,501 votes cast for Doug- lass apd 1 Breckenridge. The unfavorable weatber of to-day, wherever it extends, will tend to diminish the popuisr vote considerably. There are many sged voters and valetudinarians who Would venture to the polison a fairday to deposit thetr baliots, who dare not venture the experiment in inclement weatner. sce Although both parties profess to be desir. ous of civil service reform, the election of any particular candidate to the Presideacy Will have but little effect in promoting it. The remedy lies with Congress and alone, and when that body takes hold of the be revived api injected into our present ‘Vicious system. ——_——_+ee--____. “Uncle Sammy” certainly understands the advantages of printer's ink.
