This may notbe true, but one thing Is certain, and that is that the Anthrenus Serophularic, or carpet-eaters are coming. In fact some bave already arrived, acd, like the western grasshopvers, have entered zealously upon their work of masti-. — carpets— Brussels, ingrain, tapestry, and all otner kinds. The Anthremus Scrophu- arte {8 @ very Common and destructive En ropean insect, and has only recently been detected in the United States: It belongs to the family Dermestide, which includes also the furu!ture eaters, and book-chewers, and is eplirely different in appearance and habits from tne well-known carpet moth. It con- ceals itecif bepeath the borders of carpets nailed to the floor, and eats away those por- tiens. Occasionally it locates itself in tn cracks of the ioor, following which it cuts across entire breadths of carpet, leaving a Hine which seems to have been cut by the scissors. It destroys new as well as car- to breed and multiply, it eats only during the summer 8. Prof. J. A. Lintner, a well-known ento- mologist, describes these interesting insects as small ovate fom pee about one-tenth of an ipeb in length, thickly clothed with numer- ous short, bristle-like hairs, and terminating im a pencil of the forming atail. Itis ex- ceedingly active In its motions, and glides away veryrapidiy. The captared several of th ve and fed them upon pieces of carpet. The detection of this insect adds to our faun® another species of the dreaded genus of Anthremus perhaps to equal in its destructive agevcy the well-known museum pest, the A. varius (formerly Known as A. mu- sworum), the obtrusive guest of all our col- lections of natural history, whose ravages it feems im, ble to fully guard against, and #0 exceedingly difficult to control. Tae car- pet bug, as it is called, has already caused alarm in New York and other cities. A MATERIALIZED HOLE.—Take a sheet of stiff writing paper and fold It into a tube an inch in diameter. Apply it to the rignt eye ard look steadfastly through it, focus- sing the eye on @ny convenient object; —— the leic eye open. Now piace the left I» held = upward, edgeways against the side of the paper tube, and about an inch or two above its lower end. The astonishing effect will be | ge of abole, bg uy of the size of the cross section of the tube, made through tne left hand. This is the hole in which we propose to materialize another and smalier hole. As we need a genuine aperture, and it would be incon- venient to make one ip the left hand, let a sheet of white paper be substituted therefor and similarly beld. Just at the part of the paper where the hole eoualling in diameter the orifice of the tube ap; 5 @ opening , inchin diameter. Now tently into the tube; and the second hole, defined by itsdifference of {llumaination will be seen floating in the first hole, yet both will be transparent. The illusion, for of course it is one of those odd pranks our binocular vision plays upon us is certainiy one of most curious ever devised. Be- sides, here is the actual hole clearly visibie, and yet there is no solid body to be seen to define its edges. It js not @ mere spot of light, beeause, if a page of print be regarded, the lines within th ndaries of tne little bole will not coincide at all with those sur- rounding it and extending to coe of the large apparent aperture. Each eye ob- viously transmits an entirely different im- pression to the brain, and that ja unable to digen' ‘le them, lands usin the palpa- le materialized of hole.—[Sei- entific American. ————— CHOOSING FoWLS For TAELE.—It is siv- mee of oe Saree cies at markets. Independent tells the following: “While travelling through Arizona in 1819 With an exploring party, we made our camp one evening near a canyon, the bottom of which was covered with fine sand that had drifted from the neighboring plains. While €mployed im @rranging our camp, the bota- nist of the expedition, Dr. B, wandered some distance in pursuit of plants. He re- turned shortly and reported toat there were indians near ai band. He was 2s cool as a cucumber, and didn’t show a sign of auexiety cralarm. On reaching the canyon he walked leisurely into camp. A party imme itate- ly set out to determine the possibilty of danger, and discovered two Indians aad a Squaw. After capturing thei they ex- amined the vicinity in which the Doc or had met with bis remarkable adventure. Toey found bis footprints, which siehified ® can- tious retreat to thecanyon. But alas! for the frailty of human nature; his footprints in the canyon were eight feet apart, by measure- ment, and not exactly indicative of ibe lelsurely manner in which he had ap- proached the camp. The Doctor acknowl- edged the corn, remarked that that was about as leisurely as he ever wished to walk under similar circumstances.” ‘WiInpow PLANTS.—As the season for in? door culture of plants approaches, and many bave not the reserve of greenhouse or con- servatory from which they can daily decor- ate their rooms, it becomes a desire to know what plants they can easliy cultivate, and have {n a room not heated more than just to Keep out frost.
