Yesterday, in the Criminal Court, Judge MacArtbar, the trial of the case of Johanna Turbip, charged with the murder of Sterling Terbin, on the 5th of July last, was contin- wed after our report closed, and Judge Mac- Artbur having charged the jury they retired at 3150’clock. A large crowd remained in the rocm unti! six o'clock, when Judge Mac- Arthur stated that if upon a ver- dict by 11 o’clock p. m. he would return to reeetve it if informed of the fact. The prisoner, who had during the afternoon sat with bowed bead, now and then dropping a tear, W&s taken tothe witness’ room where, in ebarge of an officer, she remained until i | o’cloek, when she was taken back to jail. The Court remarked on the thorough man- ber in whieb the prisoner bad been tried; it ‘Would searcely be possible for either side to present thecase more fully. He had heard. during the trial, the jury spoken of as one of more than ordinary intelligence, and he boped that they would come to a verdict. The defendant was a woman, and there was & patural repugnance to convicting a wo- man of acrime punishabie with death; but they should not allow such fact to deter them from finding a verdict according to the jaw and evidence as they understood it. A verdict of ‘guilty of manslaughter” or “guilty of murder,” either will be satisfac- tory to the court. The jury again retired poccinnaar~eas 10:35. TBE FUNERAL of the lamented Dr. W. P.
