Migs Western was bilied for an eogagement at Wall's (now Ford's) Opera House, but was unable to appear the first four or five nights on account of serious 1I1- ness. Considerable dissatisfaction was ex- Pressed in regard to the matter, and many were uncharitabie enough to assert the be- lief that her indisposition was the result of dissipation. This coming to the ears of Miss Western, she insisted, in spite of the pro- tests of her medical attendants,on making ber appearance on the stage. Those who wit- messed ber performance that evening will doubtless never forget the scene. During the performance she frequently tottered, and several times fell prone upon ths stage. Her voice was husky and ber articulation indis- tinet, and probabiy every person in the audi- torium labored under the impression that she was grossly intoxicated. Tne play was cut short, and the curtain finally fell amid a storm of jeers and hisses. It was her last appearance, and forty-eight bours later she was dead. it seems that Senator Conkling, of New York, bas @ valid excuse for not participat- ing im the political canvass after all. He has been arraigned pretty sharpty for his ipaction, but appearance at Utica a few Weeks since, when he madea political speech, convinced those who saw him that bis 1il- ness was far from being simulated. He re- cently wrote to @ friend in New York that his iliness keeps him shut up most of the time, and that he hears but little of tne world’s news. Referenté was made to the fact in THE Stax of Saturday that the Presidential Vote will be counted on the second Wein day in Febraary. In view of the provable closeness of the result it is quite possible that the election will devcive upon the House of Representatives, in which case ‘Mr. Tilden will of course be counted in. The vote of any state objected to by one house or the other must be rejected, as provided by the twenty-second joint rule of the two houses. The odjecting process might be carried so far that the count of the electoral vote would show that neither candidate had received @ majority, and the election would be thrown Into the House. It is very easy to see how the popular will is liable to be defeated by such & pernicious system, and it is full time it was changed for one fraught with less danger to the country. Senators Morton, Thurman &nd others endeavored to pass & bill last session remedying this mat ter, but it failed for lack of time. A special dispatch from Poughkeepue States that Mr. Whitehouse, the democratic candidate for Congress from the thirteeatn New York district, withdrew becauss of his Known bitter hostility to Goveraor Tilden.
