EVENING STAR. bag ete TON: MONDAY......... Ap impression prevails tnat the Indians now coming into tne agencies from the Little Big Horp fight will be very severely dealt with—in fact, that many of them will be ex- ecuted. The impression; is an erroneous one. ‘The execution of a single Indian who took part in the Custer Sight could not be justified Dy any process of right reasoning. In the case of the Canby massacre the Mojocs dis- regarded a flag of truce, and under it treach ¢rously sbot down those whom they hat lored into their trap. The battle of the Lit tle Big Horo, however, was @ fair contest detween the Indians, who were acti the defensive, and General Custei ‘and the former can only be held as prisosers of war when captured, or when they yolua- tartly come into the agencies. ——_—___cee-- “Our Board of Public School Trustees met last week, and a ee was read by one Rao- dolph. dedicated to thoee self congratula- tops of duty ‘well d done with which weak or Wicked men endeavor to £00! eir con- ences or mislead the people. There never was a board of trustees of our public schools which exhibited more ignorance, idiocy and evil passion in its only measures which at- tracted pu vic attention than this one, and btn yon ised that the feeblest mem- should lift his voice in vin- aieation of @ course that the majority of men outside the influence of the erudite and Png minded Hovey deprecate and con. emn. ee call the attention ef the eat interrogator to the following resoia- tion, introduced by @ superintendent of eda gation st the Inter-state Convention, at pce in July last. The convention was of state superintendents entirely. We. ae believe our own board could have 1. That when the time shall arrive. as it must, when the sentiment of the Mississippi Valley shall’ conglomerate out of the heterogeneous ele- ments of which it is now composed into the cosmo. politan form. which freedom, toleration and a right Zaucation shall crystallize it into, can then, in trutheand with heartiness, clasp hands over the shadow of the vanished night "| Tae Cupsral The manner in which the rhetorical Ran- dolph bas allowed himself to be used by slimy Hovey perhaps justifies the (‘zpita! in bolding him to be the weakest manu in the Sehool board, but we think that Mr. Tur- ‘veydrop Curtis, who wrote the patroaizingly impertinent letver to Dr. Blake, chairmanof the Citizen's Committee, is possibly a shade weaker. Hovey by naming a school-house for Curtis (in secret session, of course,) and making him president of the school board, bought bim up, body, soul, and breeches. In the way of windy declamation of Pecksnif- fan sentiment and morality Curtisand Kan- doiph are'about equal. Curtis in Deportment (with @ capital D.as Professor Tarveydrop eid it was entitled to be spelled) has slightly the advantage of Kandolph, though Ran- dolph’s Deportment is very fine. Toen Car- Us, like Mrs. Merdie, has a remarkably ex- tensive bosom. [t is so excessively noble nd demonstrative that some of the ladies Insist it can’t be real. Randolph has a love- ly bosom, too, and when he and Cartis are fully iwfated with mora! mush, on some oc- casion when a teacher is to be “bounced” at the demand of Hovey, they have to move to opposite ends of the long table in the Board room, so that their pouter-pigeon protuber- ances shall not jostle as they heave and Swell. On the whole tt is not easy to deter- mine which of the two is the weakest, the ‘vainest, or the most flatulent numbug. ee The new governor of Indiana wili bring to the discharge of the duties of bis office a Weil-worn suit of biue jeans, a reputation for honesty, and rather an imperfect know! tdge of English orthography, as some of his (Congressional chirography shows. While he msy be somewhat deficient in “book lar. nin’,” bis long legislative experience wil! qualify bim in @ great measure to discharge his new duties intelligently. ———_~<2 —__ The death of the actor, Mr. Ferris, almost on the stage of Mr. Ford’s Holliday street theater, In Baltimore, on Friday night last, recalls the circumstances of the death of Helen Western, the actress,in this city a few yearsago. Migs Western was bilied for an eogagement at Wall's (now Ford's) Opera House, but was unable to appear the first four or five nights on account of serious 1I1- ness. Considerable dissatisfaction was ex- Pressed in regard to the matter, and many were uncharitabie enough to assert the be- lief that her indisposition was the result of dissipation. This coming to the ears of Miss Western, she insisted, in spite of the pro- tests of her medical attendants,on making ber appearance on the stage. Those who wit- messed ber performance that evening will doubtless never forget the scene. During the performance she frequently tottered, and several times fell prone upon ths stage. Her voice was husky and ber articulation indis- tinet, and probabiy every person in the audi- torium labored under the impression that she was grossly intoxicated. Tne play was cut short, and the curtain finally fell amid a storm of jeers and hisses. It was her last appearance, and forty-eight bours later she was dead. it seems that Senator Conkling, of New York, bas @ valid excuse for not participat- ing im the political canvass after all. He has been arraigned pretty sharpty for his ipaction, but appearance at Utica a few Weeks since, when he madea political speech, convinced those who saw him that bis 1il- ness was far from being simulated. He re- cently wrote to @ friend in New York that his iliness keeps him shut up most of the time, and that he hears but little of tne world’s news. Referenté was made to the fact in THE Stax of Saturday that the Presidential Vote will be counted on the second Wein day in Febraary. In view of the provable closeness of the result it is quite possible that the election will devcive upon the House of Representatives, in which case ‘Mr. Tilden will of course be counted in. The vote of any state objected to by one house or the other must be rejected, as provided by the twenty-second joint rule of the two houses. The odjecting process might be carried so far that the count of the electoral vote would show that neither candidate had received @ majority, and the election would be thrown Into the House. It is very easy to see how the popular will is liable to be defeated by such & pernicious system, and it is full time it was changed for one fraught with less danger to the country. Senators Morton, Thurman &nd others endeavored to pass & bill last session remedying this mat ter, but it failed for lack of time. A special dispatch from Poughkeepue States that Mr. Whitehouse, the democratic candidate for Congress from the thirteeatn New York district, withdrew becauss of his Known bitter hostility to Goveraor Tilden. Mr. Whitehouse was regarded a3 the stroug est man the democracy could put forwari, ‘Snd it is now thought that Gen. Ketcham, the republican candidate, has a fair chance Of success. —_—_—~<-e-—__ NEW STORE NEW GOODS! OLD STAND. BRODHBAD & CO., 939 PENBA.
