EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: Beading Matter on Every Page Onte and Indians. All eyes are now turned in the direction of bio and Indians. The Cincinnati Commer cial (ind. rep.) bas an elaborate review of the probabic result of the election in Ohio to-morrow, and arrives at the conclusion ‘that the republicans will carry the state by @s large ® majority as they had in 1872, ‘Which was 14,147. It concedes that the dem. ocrats will mak ‘ins In ell, or most of the twelve counties in which the republicans gained last rail, but io the other seventy-six ounties in which Alien made gains, it is positive that the republicans will recover @ll they lost and more too. The C»mmercial says: “An intelligemt study of the ition of Obio must be based upon the clear under- standing of the fact that the real issue in the state last year was the ‘good-mouey’ aad the ‘more money’ issue, and tuat the lines of oon ‘ties were badly broken. So many iicans voted for Alien that ne would have been elected if thousands of democrats bad not voted for Hayes. The tendeucy of = a canvass has been to swing partizans back into their own trations. The democrats who ‘voted for Hayes last fali oi ‘generally vote for Tilden this fall. The repablicans wno were led away by the inimitable deportmeat Jeter me as the fatherly friend of the people, and the lachrymose eloquence of bis role of the ‘heir old ranks. It is plain that this would —— powerful ter Eo It is cer- tain that testimony from all parts of tne etate is to this effect.’? Going over tne eld” by counties, the Com- mercial indicates where repubiican losses will be retrieved. Tnus, Athens fell behind 506 votes, but will overrun the vote of ‘72 this time. The 789 lost in Brown will be re- Covered, and so will the 473 in Belmont, th 466 In Columbians, tne 436 tu Clark, the 743 in Dark, the 494 In Deflaace, the 633 in Gal ia, the %0 in Harrison, the 400 in Jefferson, the &3 in Lawrence, the &%4 in Manoning, the 160 in Meigs, the 539 in Mercer, the 618 in Trambull, the 440 in Washington, the 525 in ‘Warren, and so on to the end of the list. ‘These losses represent the number of repub- Means who voted last fall for “Allen and More greenbacks.” Not @ mau of the whole 20,290 who so voted is now supporting Tilden. Bays the Commercial: “Warren county is @ sample of those re. publican strongholds in whica Alien made gains. The county bas been carefully poiled, ‘and wili go back to the old piace, with some- ‘thing adoltional. In one village—Wayves- Ville—there is @ list of tweuty.two voters Who were for Allen last fall, aad who arere- [ee this fail. The figures tell the story. 10 will hold the fort by @ large majority.” The Ohio correspondent of the New York Times writes from Cleveland, October 7 : “There has been today a great deal of comparison of views and exchange of in- formation and inquiries respecting the situ- ation. On the republican side these inter- cbanges of opinion strepgthen the common confiderce, til It may be said that among those best informed there is @ feeling of extreme bopefulvess and assurance of vic- wory. The cemocrats in private have a good many ‘ifs.’ Their canvass has been a kind of experimental affair, and they have been obliged to qualify their assertions. ‘Certain thi gs ought to be so and so, or if this attempt or that attempt succeeds, they say, when examining the prospects. bot itied to be heard outside the small circle that have, inside information; but in that circle doubt certaiuly exists. They Know by oft-repeated experience that too much confidence would absurd. But it may be said of democrats generally that they appear very confident of electing their stale ticket. “To ali outward appearances Ohio seems = sure of a republican majority on Tuesday as it seemed the Saturday before election when Gov. Srough was chosen by 100,000 —.. Uf course, a wa large sap majority cac- be counted — now, for Obio is, in the Tast few years, loser atate apeseniiy than she was formerly. iargaiy domo. ly demo from other voting jation has been Soasn Bat the oe will be large enough s povteeaf ag nett aoe si tbe eras eagzg Bayes in November.” The information received in Washington from the most reliable sources sustains the republican expectation of carrying Oalo to- Morrow by & fair majority. Concerning Indiana there is a curious de- gree of uncertainty on both sides, and amongst dispassionate observers as well ‘This comes, doubtless, from the impractica. bility of estimating the strength of the green back vote, and the relative losses each party will sustain from it. It 1s a problem, too, just bow much importance is to be attached to the withdrawal of Mr. Wolcott, the green- back candidate for governor, and the an- Bouncement of his intention to support the republican candidate for governor. Alto- gether the democrats seem to be the most hopeful of carrying the state, and it would be rather @ matter of surprise if they do not- Indians is normally much nearer being a democratic state than Obio, and unless it is carried by the democrats to-morrow by a pretty good majority they will not have much cause for elation or the republicans for depression, = ‘Watterson professes to believe that negro voters are to be exported from Kentucky to Indiana, and to head the project off he is circulating the report thatwhat theKentucky blacks are really wanted for is not to become citizens, but “subjects,” and are destined for dissection. He goes on to expiain at some lepgth why @ colored subject is more desirabie than a white subject, and why the cemand for Kentucky negroes is just now ubusually pressing throughout the medical colleges in the great Northwest. “Two or three thousand” of them at least, he reck- ‘obs, will be needed during the coming sea- son of medical lectures, and the forehanded colleges are now laying in their entire win- ter’s supply. Considering that the Keatucky negro is rather credulous and has @ great borror of dissection, Watterson probably looks upon this as an exceedingly neat and effective method to keep him out of In- diana. Probably as an offset to Watterson’s ruse, the republican managers will scare off the white Kentucky Bourbons from going over into Indiana and Ohio to vote the demo- cratic ticket, by circulating the report that the temperance crusaders have made those states @ howling wilderness by cutting off the supply of whisky. “All's tair in poll ties.” The proclamation of Governor Chamber- lain, of South Carolina, ordering the dis- banding of “rifle clubs” throughout the state within three days, is the legitimate result of the disturbances which have marked the political campaign in that state for several months past. There seems to be no denial of the fact that the rifle clubs in many parts of the state have made !t a point to attend re- publican meetings, distribute their mem- bers, all armed, throughout the crowd, and Gemand that half the time be assigned to democratic speakers. Neither is it denied that on such occasions, while democratic Speakers have been cheered to the echo, the rifie clubs is an empty threat. Theirarms are their private property, paid for with their own money, and they will not surrender them. That, atal! events, will be our advice.” The Courier goes further and says it is just as well to meet the issue at once, and deter- mine whether sixty thousand white Ameri- can citizens are to be stripped of every nat. ural and civil right because they are re- Solved to expel thieves from office, to defend themselves when attacked, and to elect a jestand capable government It closes by saying: “If Governor Chamberlain means revolution, in heaven’s rame, let it goon!” These words are pregnant with mesaing. The rifle clubs will not disband at the mere command of Gov. Chamberlain, and the re- ¥. Ootober 9. in aay part, of of wank see eiteet sotios, will be se. fol. ¥. EDW.
