EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: WEDNESDAY......0ctoher 4, 18976. Pat cinerea nw dentine nicoacnaetln theese CROSBY 5. NOYES........Editor. Beading Matter on Every Page to the “Eprror of Tax S142” or the “PUBLURER OF Tus Staz,” athe case may be. When addressed The Avenue Pavement. We bave studiously avoided takin Part in the controversy as to the kind of pavement to be laid on Pennsylvania ave- Bue, beyond urging that the utmost pains should be taken to secure the best, but the development, made tn taking up the portion of Grabamite pavement at the intersection of Pennsylvania avenue and 10th street make it necessary that attention should be called at once to the question if this is a fit Pavement for our great thoroughfare. This Piece of pavement was laid one year ago, as sample, and it is presumabie that it repre- sents the Kind of pavementatits best. In taking it up it is found to beso rotten and disintegrated that it crumbles to powder between the thumb and fingers. A closer examination shows that a waterrot bas worked through from the foundation up into the top coat half an inch from the sur- face. It is quite apparent that a pave- ment of this quality would not stand two years ure. Its deficiencies are shown in strong colors from the contrast afforded in the neighboring concrete pavement, between 9th and 10th streets, which has been down four years, and which is yet so tenacious that the workmen in removing it have lit- erally to quarry it out. This contrasting concrete may have deficiencies of its own to condemn it as a pavement for aught we Know, but it is apparent to any observer that the Grahamite. judging by this sample, ig yet more deficient, and it ts doubtful if it is much above the average of the discarded rotten pavements of the last few years. As this pavement is to be put down on Pennsylvania avenue, from 6th street to 15th street, itis @ matter of importance to the property-holders and business men on that street, as well as to the whole commu- nity, that there should be no trizting in this business. The parties putting down this pavement should be made to understand tals at once. ——- +e —____ The Cincinnati Kngwirer (dem ) expressed its disgust yesterday morning with the elec- tion returns from Connecticut, but consoled itself with the belief that better things might be expected from the new Westera state of Colorado than from the effete cor- rupt communities of the East. It said: “An election for governor and a legisla. tore occurs to day, and the result, which we are confident will be democratic, will be looked for with Interest. We have more faith in the honesty of the Colorado voters than we had in those of Connecticut.” The returns from Colorado indicate that ‘the Enqutrer’s faith in the democratic lean- ings of the Virgin State have been sadly misplaced. That paper will begin to lose faith in human nature now that Western and Eastern states alike go back on the St. Louis ticket. In consequence of the demand in Ohto and Indiava for stump speakers the supply is “running to emptins.” The democrats are in such reduced oratorical circumstances as to call in “Colonel Nicholas Smith, son-in- law of Horace Greeley,” who, it is an- nounced, “has consented to make @ half dozen speeches” in Onio. The republi can offset Colonel N. Smitn with Private Dalzell, holding Sergeant Bates in reserve We notice, by the way, that our great Co- lumbian orator, Gen. E. C. Carrington, (once District Attorney, and who wants tobe Sgain,) is stumping out West as a volanteer in behalf of “Tiiden and reform.” He has made up his mind that @ republican party that dropped him from dffice has grown shockingly corrupt and venal, and he can’t stay in ltany longer. Our oratorical son of ‘Thunder seems to be hardly appreciated out ‘West, judging from a letter from Delaware, Obio, in the Colambus Journal. The writer says: “E. C. Carrington, of Maryland, was first tptrodueced for a fifteen minutes’ speech, but instead spoke for an hour and a half, and until he was cheered down by the portion of the crowd that remained. Toe managers of the meeting twisted ia their chairs with im- swore in their hearts with =. while many & democrat, declaring the speaker was some d—d republican tent bithes to torment them, left the hall in As there are twenty-five counties covering @ large extent of territory, to be heard from 1m Colorado, it may be some days before full returns are received of the election in that state yesterday. There seems to be no reason to doubt, however, that the same ratio of republican gains wil! prevail in the remaln- ing portion of the state as in that heard from, and that it has elected republican officials and @ legislature that will give tne electoral Vote of the state to Hayes and Wheeler and €lect two republican U. S. Senators, and a republican Congressman for the remainder Of the 41tn Congress. ee When you are going to buy a piano it is always desirable to have the opinion of a competent authority to guide the selection. ‘Those who have waited to get the views of the Centennial commissioners on this mat- ter now know just whattodo. Steinway gets the prize for “pure and rich tone with sympathy and great volume.’ Weber re cetves the award for “sympathetic, pure and Tich tone combined with power;” Chickering for “rich and pure tone, volume and freedom of action;” and Knabe for “power, rich tone and sympathetic movement.” Cut this out and use it for reference when you buy. It Will belp you amazingly in deciding which is the best. ———__-+e2-_____ As the operations of the gamblers are Sometimes noted as indicating political Probabilities, it may be mentioned that the pool-selling in New York is in favor of the democrats carrying Indiana, and about two to one that the republicans wili carry Ohio. —_<+e-_. This afternoon the democrats are claiming @ victory in Colorado. We suspect that both parties will claim the state well up to Octo- ber 10, election day in Obio and Indiana. ——__see-_____ An intelligent Washingtonian who came through Indiana last week estimates that there is at least one stump speaker for every Voter in that state.
