THE MEETING OF THE LUTHERAN Sy- ¥op.—The Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Maryland Is to meet at the Memorial Church (iith-street Cirele) on the 3d of October. Pre- parations bave been made by the members of this churen for the accommodation of guests from a distance. The Synod comprises S8 churehes, with 11,000 communicants, this Memorial Church beirg the youngest of its organizations. MEETING OF IRISH AND SCOTCH RESI- DENTS LAST NIGHT—A VOTE OF THANKS TO MAJOR LEECH—AN UNPLEASANT EPI- SODE. A meeting of Irish citizens interested in Welcoming the Irish rifle team was held last evening at Bater's hall, 8th an‘ £ streats, to bear reports of committees, &c., Mr. P. M. Kelly in the chair,and H. J. Mohan secre: tary. The committee om finance reported that they had collected $142, and further con- tributions being called for $75 additional were raised. Mr. Mohan, after referring to the rumor which he had reason to believe was started by @ party present, offered & resolution that tie committee on prizes be instructed to draft suitable resolutions expressing the gratitude of the meeting of Irish-American citizens of the capital of the United States to Major Leach, captain of the Irish rifle team, in being instramental in bringing about the pleasant relations that exist to- day between Ireland and America. Mr.C. E. Joyce asked to offer an amend- mect to the resolution. Mr. Joyce's amend- ment was read as follows: ‘Whereas a number of Irishmen, resident in Washington, are opposed to the use of the Irish name in the reception of the so-called Irish team: Therefore be it Resolved, That the gentlemen interested in getting up a trophy be presented to the best shot in said team are requested to use theirown individual pames, and not that of the Irish residents of Wasbington. A number of motions were made to lay on the table, &c., and Mr. Joyes protested that he was an Irishman and hed a right to be beard. A number objected to his speaking, avd Major Dillon siating that what Mr. Joyce would say would be promptly denied, be moved that Mr. Joyce be grantei five minutes time. ~ Joyce pending this motion said that he was @ victim of British tyranny, confined in Kilmainham and Cork jails for seven months during the Fenian troubles; that be was an American citizen when arrested, and he knew of hisown personal knowledge that two of the present Irish team were on the juries that seut Irish American citizens to British prisons. The amendment of Mr. Joyce was rejected, and the ori, resolution was adopted. Messrs. Wm. Fagan, Daniel Donovan, Pat- tick O'Connor, John Bingham, T. D. Daily, M. Glenn, Thomas Hoiden, Pat- riek Cullinane, and Thomas Joyce were added to the committee on collections. THE SCOTCH TEAM TO RECEIVE A BANQUET AND A TROPHY. A meeting of the committees appointed by the delegates of the Scottish societies was heid last evening, and it was reported that they had arrapged to entertain the Scottish team at a supper on Thursday even- ing and they bad also invited the Austra- Nan teem,and that they would provide a trophy to present to the best shot In the Secttish team. A meeting of the Jackson Democratic As- sociation was held last night at their head- quarters on Louisiana avenue, the president (Mr. Jobn E. Norris) ja the chair, and W. Pierce Bell secretary pro tem. James Westfield and John Long were pro- pored for membership and their names re- lerred to @ committee. Messrs. John Ken- nedy, Thomas Mason, Frank P. Michael Hooper, assault ani bighway robbery on Lonts Letrich, who tes- Ufied that on his return from the Center market to his home, in the county, and when north of the Soldiers’ Home, Hooper attacked him on the road, and with a com- peoerd knocked him down in the gutter, icked and beat him, bit his thumb, and gouged his eyes with his thumb nall. A MAN CRUSHED To DeaTH BY A FALL- ING Rock,—Tals morning,about 7:30 o'clock, &distressipg accident, involving the instant death of a worthy young man and the seri- ous injury of another, oceurred at Bluodon & Hayaen’s blue stone quarries, near the Chain bridge, on the Potomac. About thirty men were at work in the quarry at the time of the occurrence of the accident, which was caused by the falling of an overhanging rock weighing six or seven tons, and which ia- stantly killed @ young man named James Payne. Another man pamed Frank Elifott had his leg crushed below the knee, but was not otherwise injured. Payne, wad ©2* about thirty vee~~ otage, was a very worthy oung man, aud *7as bighly respected. He leaves a wife and several children. The bards employed at once stopped work, the accident occasioning great sorrow aud con- siderable feeling against the foreman. Chas.
