As the time draws near for the important October election in Onto the air is fuliof conflicting statements In regard to the “aita- Stion” there. A letter recelved in this city from a gentleman (repu!icin in politics) ‘Of cool jnégmect, and whose sources of in- formation are probably inferior to those of no other man in Ohio, gives the following @rvey of the political field tn that state: The canvass, so far as its conduct by the re- publican state exeentive committee is con- cerned, does not lack energy or intelligence. The local canvass is being pushed well in Most districts. The stamp canvass is ag large and well conducted as ever kuown. ‘When compared to Indiana there are not so many speeches, and the whole maés is not 8O Over red-hot as there, bat it is not doubted that a proper state of incan- descence will be reached by O2tober 10th. Af the elections, state and national, were on the sameday, the republicans would have No solicitude; bat it is not easy to make all their voters understand that in view of its effect the October election is of such great importance; hence some of them are likely to indulge themselves with the luxury of Voting for Bell, the head of the democrati¢ ticket. The democratic canvassersare mak. Ing & furious and persistent raid upon Barnes, the republican candidate, on the ground that he is @ temperance crusader and an anti- secret ecciety man, and will draw some votes trem bim. Ali the “one-idea” folks—Cooper men, temperance men,&c.—that are, or ever were democrats, while they will not vote for Tilden, and @ respectable number will vote for Hayes, will support the democratic state Ucket. The Germans, who were with the re- Publicens last year, are pretty sure to be the same this year, for Hayes, but the anti-cru- Sadere will cut Barnes at the state election. As &n offset to possible loss on this score, there will be recruits to the republican ranks from temperance men and from thoughtfal quiet voters, who, without being temperance fanatics, look upon the war upon Barnes as smounting to persecution. In addition to this the republicans have a line of nominees for Congress that are very strong, and will get back some votes that were not wit the Tepubiicans last year. Making due allowance for possible losses in the quarters indicated in the October elections, be believes that even Barnes will carry the state by an increase over the ma- jority for Hayes last year. As regards the Corgressional districts, he makes tne fol- lowing estimate: First district, Force (rep.), bas about an equal chance with Sayler; Sec- ond, Matthews (rep.), will beat Banning out Of his boots; Third, Miils Gardoer (rep.), will be pushed, but will beat Savage; Fourth, the heavy majority that Greene county will give will put Howard (rep.) in over McMa- hon; Fifth, Rice (dem.) will be elected by 5,000 majority; Sixth, Gov. Cox (rep.) will be elected over Hurd: Seventh, will go dem- cratic by reduced majority; Eighth, Gene- ral Keifer (rep) is sure; Ninth, close, but Jones (rep) will beat Poppleton; Tenth, | Gouble- weight at 87c an $108,000 $108,000 | CHOICE WINTER OLOTH'NG. If the above estimate should be verified, the republicans will gain seven or eight members of Congress and lose one. ————_~ee —___. ‘Whether the stories recently circulated in regard to the prevalence of deadly fevers in Philadelphia were exaggerations or not, it is clear that there exist in that locality an ‘abundance of grounds for the gravest appre- hensions on that score. The capacity of the city to care for a throng of strangers is tried to the utmost just now; and while no effort seers to have been spared to provide food and lodging for the crowd, it is offensively manifest, because the first thing that strikes the majority of visitors on arriving there at Present is the distinct and well-deflued privy smell which pervades the atmosphere, not in the neighborhood of the great Exposition and the Schuylkill river alone, but of the thickly settled parts of the city itself. It is possible that this is not so apparent to reai- dents and those who have spent some time there, but to casual visitorsof a day or so it is painfully apparent, and to persons of del- leate organization it not uufrequently pro- duces nausea and headaches, If we are correctly informed there is little or no underground sewerage in Pailadel- pbia, so that the drainage is mainly on the surface, and as the box and well system of Privies is stardily adhered to throughout a large portion of the city, itean readily be | cali seen that any extraordinary tax upon these limited and exposed facilities must soon result in poisoning not only the air that is breathed. but also the water and food that are taken Into the stomach of the hundrais Of thousands of people now there. Given these conditions, and it is only a question of Lime how soon the public health will be un- dermined and a deadly epidemic put io suc- cessful operation. In fact, if the Centennial City does net suffer from a wide-spread and fatal disorder before her great exaibdition closes she will have the cold weather rather than any efforts of her authorities to thank for her exemption. She may escape this Season, on account Of the near approach of Winter, but if she does not furnish a harvest of death next summer or possibly two or three summers 0:7, from the poisonous seeds Bow being sown in her soll and atmosphere Ou Cioth Bi Oli Cloth all wid- hs end prices low. wre now cf oe Dest stock of Usrpets we ever ‘I new patterns and at lower prices then can bet bought sou south of nn York Ne suction goods. c.
