Another condition was that the building should be completed be- fore January 15, 1876, at_@ cost of $44,251.24, to be paid for in cash. This proposition was shortly afterwards accepted by Mr. Naylor, apd the work was resumed riyin the present season, and has been completed ina satisfactory manner in advance of the time required under the contract. In order to have the building in readiness for use the coming winter it was necessary to have considerable additional work done, both in the interior and exterior. The pave- ment on K street was to be laid, leads and approaches to the building to be made, lot graded, an abutment wall constructed, court ty stalls and stands constructed, «c. ‘be Commissioners, finding that they did not possess the necessary means to meet the expense of completing the improvements Were at a loss what to do, but finally, on the Isth instant, entered into contract with Mr. Thos. Some republican scribe, in writin; about his mouth, evolved from the depths o1 bis malignant fancy the conceit that it was put on warm and spread all over bis coun- lenance. His mouth is decidedly large, and when he laughs, which is at very rare inter- vals, it jeopardizes the comfort of his ears. He is @ gaunt man like Lincoln and as homely as @ snake fence. He has a thin, hatchet face and an uneven and an unpleas- ant complexion. I studied for ten minutes or 80 the expression of his eyes, which gave me the idea that he was a Kindly-hearted man @ fair share of intelligence and shrewdness. His “Blue Jeans,” at which all the nobs and snobs of this western country have leveled their bitterest ridicule, appeared to me a most respectable and becoming sult. The blue is of a quiet, subdued tone, like an intensified confederate gray. It is @ very superior quality of jean, as I was informed by @ dry goods democrat, who actually took hold of it on the person of the candidate and Fubbed it between his fingers to see how much cotton was in it. Just as the diabolical act was about to be con- summated several boys rushing Into the barn, and seizing the demon, dragged him by main force to the office of Justice DuBois from whence he was sent to jail. This tmely interference alone saved tha life of ttle McCreary.
