~ EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: Referring to the false and m{Schievous re- ports sent out concerning the natare of the sickuess now existing in Baltimore, the Sun eeys that all the sick who were capable of being removed and the persons living in the bouses witb them were conveyed to the ma- rine hospital, five miles below the city, on the opposite side of the river, and since Thursday last but one new case of the dis- «Ase has occurred. By the removal of the Proves, that paper says, that there was no cause for alarm, and consequently that there ‘Was Lo possible Justification for sending out exclied statements about it, or assumlug to Gcsi, uate it as the pestilence of yellow fever. aa Ohie itm October. The New York Herald has alsosent @ po- litical “Commissione:” out West to report Upon the campaign outlook. Concerning Obio he writes that he has interviewed Sen- Tom Ewing. Senator Sherman doesn’t see any reason for doubt that the republicans will carry Onio next month, bat the Ostober election republican majority, that is eaouga.” Io November, he added, there is not a shadow Of & doubt of a great republican majority. Senator Thurman thought if the election ‘Were to take place to-day, Onio would go democratic, but did not seem so sanguine a8 to what would be the result a fortnight hence. He thought many of the republican jarmers would quietly vote for Tilden in a Way ‘‘to astonish that party.” The farmers he seemed to think, were disposed to charge the present low prices of produce to the re- publican party, and would vote against it. ‘They were bewailing their ili-fortune that, ‘With the greatest crop ever made, they were Poorer and worse off than ever. Potatoes Were selling at 23 cents per bushel aad hay at $5 & ton. In answer to a question, he said the greenback men would vote for Til- den almost to @ mao; ‘It will be gall and ‘Wormwood to them to vote for Tilden, but they will doit.” Tom Ewing endorsed the opinion of Sena. tor Thurman, that “if we could hold the election to-morrow we eould win without doubt.” He thought the democrats could reverse the majority of 5,000 against them ast year, even if the vote this year was as heavy 4s that of last, which was the largest in the history of the state. He sald their de- feat last year was owing altogether to the Germans, who were allenated, not by the financial but the religious question, the sectarian school question, tne Geghan bill, &e. Gen. Ewing is the apostie of soft mooney in the West, and nataraily he does’nt Uke to admit that German diseffection to rag money had anything to do with the democratic defeat in Onio last year. He agrees with Senator Thurman in expecting great gains to the democracy from the agri- cultural interest. On the whole, it would seem from thes> interviews that leading republicans and democrats in Oblo look upon the resu! there in October as likely to be close, and that the democrats apprehend that their op ponents may gain upon them between now and the 10th of October. turbation over the explosion at Heil Gate yesterday, will probably feel rather foolish pow that the affair is over and nobody hurt— not even & pane of glass broken. There wa scarcely an appreciable report at any dis tance, the water over the mines was only slightly disturbed, and the shattered rock was not thrown above the surface of the water. The result seems to have been all ‘that was expected, however, in the removal Of the reef operated upon, as the water already seeks the new channel offered. This, however, is but the beginning of the work of blowing up Hell Gate, and it is estimated that it will require ten years to finish it- The blowing up of Hallett’s Point reef, effected yesterday, is only a part of the general scheme of this great work, and Flood rock, the one to be attacked mext, provided Congress makes the need- ful appropriations, covers about seven times as much space as that covered by the reef at Hallett’s Point. Haliett’s Point is directly opposite 9th street, New York, and is the northwestern ex. tremity of Long Island. The reef is a rocky prolongation of the point itself under water. Leaving the land at the surface it Projects outward and downward so as to reach @ depth of 23 feet of water at the dis- tance of about 300 feet frem the shore. At the water's edge the reef is about 600 fect Wide, but tapers off as it recedes from the abore. The solid contents of the rock was estimated at about 110,451 cubic yards. The reef extends nearly half way across the main channel through Hell Gate, and being nearly opposite another large and danger- ous obstraction— Flood rock—has made nav- igation at that point extremely hazardous. Besides the danger of vessels coming in col- lision with avy reef lying in the direct channe!, eddies are produced on both sides Of it; according to the direction of the tidal currents, and thus vessels coming dowa in the ebb tide, while hugging the shore and trying to keep clear of the rocks on the op- Fosite side, were in great peril! of being drawn upon the great reef at Hallett’s Point. As the explosion yesterday was success- ful, the reef at Hallett’s Point may be spoken of in the past tense, though it is Likely there is considerabie debris remain- ing to be removed. ‘There is some discrepancy of statement between the campaign papers as to the num- ber in attendance at the “Boys in Blue” con- vention at Indianapolis. The Cincinnati Gazette (rep.) says there were fifteen thou- sand in ling; the Cincinnati Bajuirer (dem.) says there were but thirty-five haodred Probably an average of the two statement ‘Would about hit the mark. ‘The thieves of Philadelpnta have aidressed ® communication to the mayor asking him Uo designate a day when they may all attend the exhibition without fear of molestation. ‘The mayor may as well draw the line some- where.
