EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: SATVEDAY....September 23, 1876. Notice to Correspondents. Persons writing letters to this office for publice- tion or in regard to business will oblige us and best serve their own purposes by addressing them simply to the“ En:rox cv Tax S742" or the “PuaLisuxe ov Tux STAR,” asthe case may be. When addressed About the Carolinas. A fortnight ago Dr. Redfield, the southern and southwestern political correspoadent of the Cincinnati Commercial, wrote to that paper from South Carolina that the demo- crats bad @ fmir prospect of carrying the state, and electing Hampton governor. He DOW writes that the nomination of Chamber- Iain by the republicans changes the aspect Of affairs somewhat, and that the chances are now undoubtedly with the republicans; @ thoveh the contest is by no means free fror doubt. He is toldin the Spartanburg district, from which he writes, that there are many white men of the more conservative Stripe who will quietly vete for Chamberiaia @n the day of the election, and say nothing @bout it. To be sure in any case the white Vote which Chamberiain will receive will be ‘Very small, but it will be larger forhim than could possibly be polled for any other repub- Mean candidate. There is no denying but that the bold, aggressive policy of the ‘Wwhites—a policy not unmixed with shot-gun argument—had much to do with forcing the biacks to take Chamberiain, notwithstand. the Whipper-Mosesopposition Under other circumstances he would have been thrown overboard. But the straggls in South Caro- lina to-day is a struggle for the life of the Tepublican party in that state, and the blacks ‘Were impelled to stand by their strongest man. Dr. Redfield is inclined to believe, however, that the democrats will gain one or two Con. gressmen in South Carolina. The represen- tation is now solidly republican, and has been so since reconstruction. The point with the democrats, however, is to get the legisia- ture. For that they would sacrafice con- greasmen, governor. and even Tilden. They want to reform the internal affairs of th3 state, and they cannot take steps in that direction without possessing the | agisisture. Besides, there is a United States Senator to be elected this winter, and that is taken into consideration. The same correspondent writes from Char- lotte, North Carolina, September 16, that ‘Vance (dem.) will probably carry that state by from ten to fifteen thousand, and Tilden by probably twenty thoasand. He thinks the republicans may possitiy gain a mem- ber of Congress, but that it is more possible than probabie. ——_—_~<ee-—____. ‘The Chicago Tribune trots out the figures to show that for twenty years the demosrats have carried Indiana at the October elec- tion oftener than have the republicans, or six times, while the republicans have car- ried it but four times; also that since 1353 Indiana has been @ democratic state, and therefore if that party carries it on the 10tb Of October, “they will merely hold their own; if they lose it the republicans will have gained a democratic state.’ —_<_<__<co—___ “Young-man-afraid of-bis-horses” should hereafter be called ‘“ Young-man-afraid-of work.” So might @ good many pale faces for tbat matter, and many of them aaight say with this red-skin tramp, in his very candid speech at the Red Cloud council on Wednesday: “I give notice that it will tare me @ long time to learn to labor, and I ex- pect the President will feed me forahundred years, perhaps a great deal longer.” When this simple child of nature took the pen in his hand and made his mark he threw him- self into the future. The prophetic soul 07 the Centennial savage taking a backward view from the year 1976, expressed its vision thus: “That ‘~’ is to signify that the Great Father bas fed and clothed me a hundred years, and given me wagons and cattle.” —_—_—_-<+2-__ “Confederate money wanted— Perso: ing covfederate money or bonds, if rar oft the Proper issue and devomiration, can find a — ‘at fair prices by inquiring at this ee ane in the Alabama Jron 4g¢, and some of the cam- paign republican papers are using it as an argument to show that the belief is held in the South that if Tilden is elected confed- ate securities will at once obtain a market value.
