An [cdian’s Last Shot. STILL FIGHTING APTER BOTH LEGS AND A SHOULDER HAD BREN BROKEN. On Monday morning, August 21, four white men, while out hunting about two miles from Deadwood, Killed @ deer, and while they were skinning it one of them saw an Indian th gered them, leading his pony. He was probably trying to surprise them, but, being uncertain of their exact position, be bad approached too near, and ey discovered him first. One of the party snatched 5 4 bis sbot gun, loaded with buck shot, and fired both barrels, bringing down the Indian and his pony. The confident manner in which the Indian had walked to. ward them led them to suppose that he was supported by ® number of others, and they quickly retreated toward Deadwoo! for rein- foreements. A party started out to scout the country, and on reaching the spot where the deer lay, the men saw the body of the Indian by the sideof bis pony, and, thinking him dead, tney rushed forward. This action Was fatal to ove of the party, for a snot from the Indian's rifle struck him In the heart. A volley from the others killed the Indian instantly, however, and his body was quickly surrounded by the white men. The Indian bad been almost riddied with buck shot, one shoulder and both legs having been broken, yet be bad managed to bandage his legs and to take uuerring aim with bis wounded arm. Knowing that his life would be taken witn- out doubt, be had prepared to sell it as dearly as possible, and, lyingon his back, he rested bis rifleon his wounded legs and sbot cead the foremost of his assailants. AN ASSASSIN ASSASSINATED—Shot Dead on the Same Spot on Which His Victim Feu Ten Years Ayo.—A telegram from Hallsyilie,Mo, September 8, On Tuesday last Dr, Thomas Keene, a well-known physician, Was killed by Dr. B. F. Austin, another prac- teing physician of this vicinity. The trou- ble grew out of the circulation through the malis of clroulars defaming Dr. Austin. He investigated, and concluded that Dr. Keene was their author. Arming himself with a double-barreled sholgun on Tuesday after- noon, be went into the principai street of the town, took @ feat on @ dry-goods box, and waited for the rivai doctor. Dr. Keene soon rode Into town from the country, and as he wes dismounting Austin fired athim. Tae shot entered his bead and breast, and he fell dead. A young man named Bullerton, who was in Keene’s employ, seeing bis employer fall, opened fire with @ revolver on Dr. Aus- Un. Austin emptied the other barrel of his shotguo at Bulierton, but neither was burt. Austin then rede coolly to Columbia and gave bimself up. In 1896 Dr. Keene assassi- rated Peter Evans, an aged man,on the spot on which he fell. He was tried for m » and sentenced to sixteen years in the peni- teptiary.
