FOR OCTOBER Out West. Naturally the interest in the great national political campaign centres for the time being 1n Ohio and Indiana. Concerning Ohio this much of concurrent statement comes to us From various semi-impartial sources: The S@nvass there has not opened very actively as yet, but will, from all appearances, get “red-bot” in less than two weeks; at the present date there is an undoubted disaffec- tion on the part of the German voters to Milton Barnes, the republican candidate for Secretary of State, who, it bas been devel- Oped since his nomination, is not only astift Prob! bitionist, but who aiso took part in the temperance praying crusade in Ohio. It Would seem that while by his ramrod proh!- bition ideas he has alienated the Germans, he has not gained tne support of the straight- Out temperance men, who Insist upon run. ming a ticket of theirown, by which the re- Publicans will lose, perhaps, one or two thousand votes. To offeet these discourage- ments the republicans can in @ presidential year count safely upon drawing out the tell. Ing vote of the old-fashioned abolitionists up im the western reserve, who do not bother themselves ordinarily much about state pol- ities. On the whole, there seems to be no doubt that Ohio will givea moderate repub- liesn majority in October, and a much larger one in November. Curiously enough, each — eee. Gn, 033 D asec: party expresses itself coafident of snocess if it is not beaten by the importation of fraud- Ulent voters from Kentucky by the rascally Oppesition. From all the indications this haffing between the parties about the im- Portation of voters is a pretty clear case of the pot calling the kettle biack. It is a des- Perate fight for supremacy betweon Hen- Gricks and Morton, as well as for the prestige of victory for effect on the November elec- ton. Two weeks ago the democrats seemed to bave a decided lead in Iadiana, judging by the size and enthusiasm of their meet- ings, addressed with great effect by Voor bees, Julian and others; but the republicans have now covered the state with star speakers of national magnitude, who are drawing great crowds in turn. The ma- jority in Indiana is not likely to be large either way, but the Democrats seem yet to have the best prospect of earryiag it in Oc. tober. ——_____-+e-+-_____ The paragraph in yesterday's Paper in re- gard to Carl Schurz's engagements in Ohio sbould have read ‘his week, |getead of “next” Week, as printed. He Was found in the wrong berth of a sleeping car, in company with the wrong woman, the other night, and the story goes thathe was badly pummeled about the face by the in- dignant husband, who inopportunely came Upon the scene. The charge against Mr. Tilton seems to be pretty well sustained, but from the circumstances of the case, so far as given out, there seems to be good grounds for suspecting that the affair was @put up Job, so far, at least, as the offending wife and indignant husband are concernei. The situations are not natural, by a long way. Of course this view of the case doesn’t help Tilton any; he seems to be guilty any way; but it opens the door to inquiry as to the Probable objects of the conspiracy, if such it really is,and such it certainly appears to bave been. ——__——_-e--—_____ A little pale green light is thrown upon the question of what theatrical criticism is Worth in this country by the editor of the Cincinnati Enquirer, who says that Mr. Schwab of the New York Times and Mr. ‘Wheeler (Nym Crinkle) of the World are Known to the theatrical profession as strikers. The performance will Probably begin now. ———_—_<+e- -__ SAVE THE TRERs—It has been remarked bow few people seem to take any in- terest in ule treescarefully planted in front of their dweilings by the parking com- mission. After @ storm like that of Sunday, this painful neglect was particularly notice able. Whilst occasionally, 6ven during the severest of the storm, some man or woman could be seen staying with cords and Props the top-heavy sapling in front of the house, hundreds of trees were allowed all day yes- terday to lie prostrate in front of premises Occupied by the owners themselves. After @storm like thatof Sunday the employees Of the parking commission have ample work for several days in looking after the trees along pudlic squares and spaces. It would be but the work of a few momenta for any- one to raise @ prostrate tree in front of his premires and temporarily stay it with a Prop until it can receive attention at the bands of the parking commission.
