EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: TUESDAY September 12, 1876. Beading Matter on Every Page Average sworn Daily Circulation ever 15,000,_being more than three times that of any other daily paper in Washington, and equal te that of all the other daily papers im the city added together. Notice to Correspondents. Persons writing letters to this office for publica- tion or in regard to business will oblige us and best serve their own purposes by addressing them simply to the “Error o Tux Stan” or the “Pustmnee ov Tux Stax,” asthe case may be. When addressed personally they are regarded as private letters, and 1m cases of absence inconvenient delays frequently occur frum that cause. en The Maine Election. The indications are tnat Maine has gone republican by about thirteen thousand ma- jority. This is arepublican gain of between nine and ten thousand on last year's vote, but does not reach the majority of the last Presidential year, 1872. The figures last year were: Connor, republican, 57,312; Roberts, democrat, 53,307; scattering, 43; Conner’s majority,3,922. The aggregate vote last year was 111,702, and if as reported by telegraph, the aggregate this year reaches 134,000, the increase has been 25,000, which is @ larger increase in the total vote than bad been counted upon. In the election of 1872 Perham, republican, had 71,883; Kim- ball, democrat, 55,343, and Perham’s majority in &@ total vote of 127,266 was 16,510. In 1873 the majority was 13,358, and in 1874, 11,397, making the average for the last foar years 11,468. Toe republicans this year seem to have Swept the entire Congressional districts, despite the bolt in the ist and 4th districts ‘and the reported disaffection in the 5th, (Eugene Hale's.) Two years ago the vote in the Congressional districts stood as follows: the republicans now carry the Ist district by 1,000 majority; the 2d by 2,000; the 3d by 3,500; the 4th by 2,000; and the 5th by 2,500; or @n aggregate majority of 11,000, despite the bolts. The legislature will apparently be almost Wholly republican. Last year eleven of the 31 senators and 62 of the 151 representatives ‘were democrats. Un the whole the republicans have reason to claim &@ substantial success, though their majority does not quite come up to the flood- Udeof 12. We think the result in Maine ‘Will be generally accepted as encouraging for the prospects of the republicans in the national contest in November. The falling off in the production of the British coal mines, and the steady advance in price in consequence, isa matter of no ttle solicitude on that side of the water, as the ability of England to maintain her com- petition in manufacturing with the rest of the world depends on the maintenance of the supply of cheap fuel. As her manufactures are the source of her prosperity and wealth, anything that threatens them is a serious matter. The London Times has given con- Siderable attention lately in its editorial columns to the subject of American manu- factures, and it comes to the conclusion that in the United States, England has now pow- erful competitors in all branches of industry, and especially in that which it considered its own—thbe iron trade. The Centennial ex- hibition has, it says, brought together such an assemblage of the products of American industry as to impress the visitor with a strong sense of the manufacturing activity of the United States. In pointing the moral which adorns the tale, the Times holds that the British people shouid not learn to resign themselves to@ permanent exclusion from the markets in which the United States man- ufactures compete with it, and should esti. mate more justly the conditions on which business should be conducted in the fatare. ‘This is about the pleasantest year for poli- ticlans we have ever had. So far both par- tes are pleased with the result of the fall elections,—particulariy in Vermont and Maine, where each according to its own showing, bas gained @ substantial victory. If this thing keepson, we shall have both Hayes and Tilden elected, and then every body will be happy. Tra ia la! —____- +2 ____ The American Free Dress League, which held its third annual meeting in Paila- delphia the other day, adoptei resolutioas denouncing the present fashion of femsie @ttire and demanding reform. Ths present style was stigmatized as inhuman, extrava- gant and debilitating. There is no doubt about it; but now let the League tell us just What Kind of a reform in dress they want ‘Mrs. Merriweather, of Tennessee, took the ground that the costume of the members of the League would not fill the bill, being too unattractive. The resolutions deciare that the “garmenture of women should be of @ual form for the legs as well as the arms, as their use and all reason dictats;” bat let the members of the League givs the country an idea of just what they mean by wearing a Specimen dress of this kind. Certainly none Of the reform dresses yet exhibited seem to have met the popular taste. a ‘The rush from all parts of the country Cen- tennialward continues to increase, and will doubtless be kept up until the close of the €Xposition in November. —_—_-e2-____ A report is in circulation that Carl Schurz bas written to @friendin Washington, “a Prominent republican,” that the German Vote of Onio is almost solid for Tilden, and that unless some energetic measures are taken to affect @ change of opinion in that element Ohio will certainly go democratic. As diligent enquiry has failed to develop ‘who the prominent republican is that re- Geived the letter, and as it would seem to be a@ trifle unlikely thata@ prominent repubili- can would divulge the contents of @ letter making such damaging admissions it will perhaps be well enough to wait for more definite information before placing Onto in the democratic column on the strength of this reported concession of the fact by Carl Schurz. s20e- The barrel of money didn’t do in Maine —__<0e Bret Harte and Stuart Robson, the pro- prietor of his new play, “Two Men of Sandy Bar,” have both got into hot water because the latter was rash enough to say that the York press was because they did not buy up acalmaese of whom offered to sell the opinion of at least o2¢ newspaper ofthatcity. From what ts generaily kaown of the fellows who set themeel ves up for lite- al a is doubtless a substantial ground for Mr. Robeon’s accusations; at the game time be owes it both to himself and respectable newspapers of the couatry to = at once the person who made the offer, and the journal he proposed to use for that sort of business.
