In the first district the friends of Representative Burleigh are much exercised about his being dropped in favor of Thomas B. Reed, of Port- land,and the democrats hope that enough Of the disaffected will vote for their nominee, Jobn M. Goodwin, of Biddeford, toelect him. In the fourth aistrict a fierce local opposition to the repub!ican nominee, Liewellyn Pow- ers, of Houlton, bas resulted in the nomina- tion of Lyndon Oak, of Garland, as a bolt- ing candidate. It is the belief of good jadges of the political situation that both Powers @nd Reed will be elected by small msjori- ties. It would appear from this ‘statement that in his returns he rather over- estimated than underestimated the value of bis property. Now let Governor Tilden show that he has overvalued or at leasi not under- valued his income. The two candidates will ‘then stand immaculate before the people on ine tax business. ee ——— ‘The intellectual department of the New York Herald insists that gross treachery o2 the part of the latter has widely separated President Grant and ex-Secretary Bristow, nd its sporting department seems to b3 doing its best to bring on an open and bitter Dght between them.
