Building. | DEDICATION CEREMONIES YESTERDAY. Yesterday afternoon the new sehcol bulld- ing for colored children, at the intersection of I and ist streets southeast, which will be known by the name of the Ransall building, was dedicated with a priate exercis: ,° which took place in ball on the * ,id The building was described 10 yester STaR. There were tO” the tras. presen! (presidert.’ Gnamplin, "af, and many of the teachers and 1" and friends of the pu- pils of the dis! we ae re te were also ent. Mr. Henry Johnson led, and called the meeting to order, making some appro- priate remarks, referring to the progresa made during the past few years by the col- ored schools. Rev. W.J. Waiker offered a Pp = ‘der read a part of the 8th chapter M Superintendent G.F.T-Cook was tatro- duced, and, after ing to the models of schoo! buildings of the last and present cen- tury as showing the progress made, he said it was even more apparenton tue site of this building. Herea and incommodious seboo! house was occupied in 1566, and In ten short years it bad been found necessary to erect this magnificent building. He referred to the difficulties experienced ers in the early days of the color: d schools, and related how they had been overcome. a ecial reference was made to the labovs of jes Randall (after whom the bullding was named), who had charge of the schoo! from 1868 to 1874, and Iiteraliy died at her post. Mr. Cook, in concluding, said that credit should be given the District Commissioners for their co operation, and to tne sub-board of trustees for their zeal and energy. Curtis accepted the building oa bebalf of the board, made @ speech, in which bé said the day has passed when buildings of this description were in danger from the incendiary on account of jealousy of the color of the students. Mr. Jobnson, in a few fitting remarks. re- ferred to the presence of Mr. Frederick Doug- lass, whom he introduced. r. Douglass remarked that he was present as @ spectator. and had been much edified by the remarks made. He had thought how much the world had been in- debted to religion and how much to krowl- edge. If the world had made any progress from rudeness to civill: sion to charity toward: to liberty, it had been Knowledge. It was knowledge that had set In motion the paddle wheels of all the steamers; it was by knowledge that all the world had been made into ® whisper gallery. At one time the world did not know that & man s convict'ons could not be changed by piucking ont his eyes and his tongue, and they tore out the hearts of some men because of theiropinions. Reason bad shown them that multitades of people of different opinions could live together in bar- mony. was a time, too, when the le of America thought that the negro and the white man could not live together in harmony; that the white man should pe kept up by keeping the black man down. “How slow was knowledge, and how patient was truth; truth was patient, and we waited, and by and by deliverance came.” Mr. Johnson thea declared that they dedi- cated thia building as the Randall school for the education of the colored youth of South Washington. The bencdiction was pronounced by Rev. James d, and the assembly was dis- missed. ——_e—____.
