EVENING STAR WASHINGTON: _SATURDAY August 26, 1876. —_ OSEY S. NOYES.......-Editor. Reading Matter on Every Page Average ewern Daily began ~ et over 15,000,-being more three times 4 of any other daily paper in Washington, and equal tc that of all the other | daily payers in the city added together. Notice to Correspondents. Persons writing letters to this office for publica- tion or in regard to business will oblige ux and bost own purposes by addressing them simply Tox ov THE Stax” or the “Puatis STAR,” asthe case may be. When addressed y they are regarded as private letters, and f absence inconvenient delays frequently um that cause, ‘That the democratic party has a capacity for biuodering which almost amounts to in- Spiration, is illustrated in the course it has recentiy pursued in South Carolina. The Momination of General Wade Hampton for governor cannot be regarded in any otuer ight than the utter rejection and repudiation ‘of Governor Chamberlain and his policy by ‘What is, through @ curious perversion oy language, called the “conservative ele- mente” io that state, with notice to all the World, «iso, that nothing short of @ native- born f:e-eating disunionist shall hereafter be allowed to control her destinies, if they @an help it. This would seem to leave to ‘the other party no alternative but to nom!- mate one of the most extreme representative men io its ranks, and make the fight square ‘and hot between the two races. On nearly every account this would ba a most depior- able staie of things; bi", as the case stands, who could blame the colored people if it should be brought about? They are in no wise responsible for the attitude in which they bave been forced by those who pretend to be their friends; but as they are largely in the majority in the state, and can easily carry it if @ fair election is allowed, they will very naturally and properly make the best Sight possible for their political if not also for their physical existence. As politi- clans make their beds, so must they le in them. =e Itisnow very charitably suggested that perhaps the $20,000 railroad fee which Gov. Tilden is charged with receiving in 1362 may have been earned in that year, but may not have been peid in that year, and that conse- quently in reckoning his income he could not of course include the sam named. Gov. Tilden’s private secretary, while not author- ized to speak for Mr. Tilden, says it must be remembered that a lawyer may work a long time before getting his fee, and that @ con- Scientious man would of course consider the Work he nad done from year to year as a Case progressed, and that the fee, though re- ceived in one year, was not his income for that year; it bad been, in fact, earned each year during the progress of the case. This is alittle thin, but it may do for people with @lastic consciences. It will not, however, Batisfy those who honestly paid their taxes to keep the Union armies in the field during the war. Mr. Tilden swore in his answer in ‘the railroad suits that the money was paid to him in 1962; and the laneuage of the tax reurn blanks was too precise and compre- hhensive,as tax-payers will remember, to allow any quibble as to when it was earned Buch as is suggested for Mr. Tilden’s benefit. ‘The fact is, this charge of defrauding the government is about the most serious yet made against the reform candidate, and it meeds to be promptly and thoroughly ex- plained away. But indeed a satisfactory “explanation” is hardly possible. The only thing that will meet the case is to show con- elusively that there is no foundation what- ever for the charge. 2 --_____ Everybody is anxious to know the result Of the present perturbed condition of the eoal trade, and hopeful tnat lower prices ‘will prevail this winter. Coal stocks of all Kinds have taken sudden tumbles of late pronsnjarse este sale of 500,000 tons will take place, after which it is believed prices Will once more become fixed, at 13ast until ‘another new ring or combination is formed to send them up again. Meantime, we can only hope they will never reach the old fig- mes. re - __ New York city has been called upon to ®ontribute one hundred and fifty masons and Btone-cutters to go to Scotland under a two ‘Years’ contract, and It is stated that several hundred more will go soon. Many people ‘Will becurious to Know why Ssotland should draw upen us for these classes of workmen, ‘When so many thousand laborers in Great Britaiz are out of employment. The reason ‘must be found either in the fact that our masons and stone-cutters are superior work- men, or that their services can be secured for less than the compensation given Scotch Workingmen of the same classes. ———_c-oce- Governor Kellogg, of Louisiana, who was lately interviewed in this city, thinks the republicans can carry that state, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Florids, if the republicans are allowed to vote as they please. Hedespairs of Mississippi, where he believes the system of intimidation is 6o per- fect that but few colored repabiicaus will be permitted to vote as they aesirc. see: George William Curtis, wo is a model ed- itor, seems to be @ failure a @ politician, the New York Herali thinks. Tse Evening Post, however, considers that biz effuris to prevent the pledging of the Syracuse coavention to Conkling, to secure a proper nomination at Cincinnati and to obtain a better candidate than Mr. Cornell, first for governor and then for iteutenant-governor, ¢o not come under the name of failures. And yet all of Mr Custis’ polished rhetorie fatied to secure the Bomination of his favorite candidate either Bt Cincinnati or Saratoga. The New York Tribune tages ki lly to the Proposition to give retiring Presidents a moderate pension for life, and a life svat ag United States Senator-at large. It th.nks ‘the general regret with which the country Will see the man who carried our fag from Fort Donelson to Appomatiax hopelessly Fetired to private life at the age of fifty-five may serve @ good purpose in spurring the Sountry to maxe the change. Items like this ‘appear ‘in the San Fran- Cisco papers: “ We are requested to state tuat five boot pa boys, between the ages of Sfteea e@rs, are wanted In San Jos: county 4 pic 6 hops, @ kind of work wi Bignef ty Cn ica, malstaken policy, was formeriy as- Chinamec.
