EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON: A Prospective Library It will be remembered that Dr.J. M. Toner, formerly of Pittsburg, but now of Washing- ton, D. C., made @ proposition to oa = the founding of a meatcal bomen — Collection < works of that characi At $20,000, 11 gn accep- ce. First, he asks that a batiding of fire Proof be crectad for the ea secoad, it it be called by his name. wo Sonate a further sum sufficient to secure to ’he liorar, yaicians, thoagh » canaot reconciie conditions. The erectioa of 8 Ore proof library building, as the doctor Fequests, contemplates @n tostitution on no small scale. If itis to be cailed by Dr. To See Saaee, be Cae comme ot anew who it be 7s to contribute to it would by the reflection tnat their gifts ‘were going to swell the creJit of one man, ‘whose donation = expected to form but a Small of the whole. A commit- tee Of physicians have been in commaanica- dion with Dr. Toner for some time past, Placing before him the disadvan! of the ition, and endeavoring to have the modiiied. a far berry ite been Buccessful; negotiations are still pending.— ‘Allegheny Mait, 8th. By the sbove ex*ract we learn for the first ‘time thet « valuable private library, owned 1n Warbiugton, bas the prospect of becoming Zhe nucleus of a public library in another elty, and we may add that we receive the information with something of regret. Since Zhe large and valuable Peter Force collec- Zion was bought by the governmsnt and ad- ed to the national library of Cong’ess, there * bas been no private collection in Washing- Zon so fall and complete in American his- Zorical and biographical works as that of Dr. Toner; and it is but jast to add that his Liberality and industry in bringing it toe wether have been fally equalled by the cheer- ful willingness with which it has always Deen placed at the disposal of those having Occaeion to consult it. From our own Ro owledge, we can testify as to the value of Zhe bistorical and biographical divisions of Zee library. We are not qualified to jadge ‘28 lo the medical portion of its collection, ut we bave repeatedly heard it Spoken of dy our physicians as 06 of the rarest in the country, containing, as it does, almost com- plete files of all American medical journals, 8 well as the contributions of all or nearly ull American authors to the medical litera- dure of the country. In view of these facts It occurs to us that ‘The members of tne medical Profession in Pittsburgh are not wise in not at once ac- eepting the offer as made. Tne old aiage 2hbat “a bird in the hand is worth two in the Dush” applies to this case with peculiar Zorce. A specific proffer of valuable Prop- erty, ready to be fulfilled on the instant, is ‘worth vastiy more than @ possible future Contingency that may never arise, and that is almost certain not to present itself during @his generation. The books are already col- ected; they exist as @ unit, and are ready for transfer anyday. That is the great thing. A library is rather a growth than a creation; nd those who have had experience in form- ing one for public use well Know that it is easier to obtain money for the purpose than it is to get together a large collection of Well selected books, particularly of those relating to any special branch of science or Bpeciaity in literature. We thick, therefore, that the conditions mamed by the donor are reasonabie and @roper. A public institution lige this must bave some title; and what name more ap- propriate than wat of its fouader and bene- factor? Subsequent contributors could bardly object to this, but since none are Known to exist, why reject a certainty, lest @n improbabie uncertalaty might some tima @riser It seems to us, also, that Dr. Toner’s ‘@ffer to provide s fand sufficient to secure Zo the proposed institution the additional ‘@dvaniages of annual lectures on med- deal or scientific subjects is one that ought toenlist the sympathy and insure the active support, pot alone of the medical Zaculty, bat of the people of wealth sad cul- Zure in Pittsburgh outside of the profession, nd thus induce them to aidin raising the Yequired amount of money, since such lec- Zures could hardly fatl to be both interesting and beneficial to the general public. But we do not propose to argue the case in behalf of the people of Pittsburgh. We yather hope, on the other hand, that the gea- rous offer of our towasmaa may not be ac- wepted. And in this connection some of our readers may perhaps wonder why It was not Zirst made to our own city, the home of his @doption. In explanation of this, we may ®ay that Dr. Toner is @ native of Pittsburgh. ‘This e!rcumstance, doubtless, coupled with the fact that the large and valuable library in the Medical Museum here is generally avatlable for reference to the profession in “Washington, led him to make the offer, so creditable alike to his heart and head, ani Which we cannot help wishing he may yet find good excuse for w.thdrawiog. He has BUll before him, we trust, many years of usefulness and calm enjoyment, in which ahese companions of other useful years ‘would be greatly missed. He should pause, aherefore, and be slow to part with them, as he would be to part with other old and val.
