Champlin had said to a friend of bis eighteen months ago that there would be afuneral some time and it would not be bis, and he supposci that that was a threat. He did not say that he would use money to get Mr. Champlin out of office, and did not reco'lect saying Anything about blacking beots, for he was not in the habit of speak- ing that way. When speaking of Champlin be was generally excited, and the general sentiment of the remarks orrespoudei with nis feelings. he would not deny that. Pack- ard, in that conversation, said he last year bad voted inst him (T.) on the represen- lations of Mr. Champlin—he not then know- ing him (T.)—but he (P.) had changed his mind. He looked on Packard at the time of the conversation as @ friend but was satis- fied now that bis —- frleudship was jusecure and that be drew him on. His (T.’s) meaning was that he would not beg oe at the hands of Champlin. E. r. Lioyd submitted a letter from Mr. J. . F. Holmead, ex-trustee, stating that in April, 1575, he had had a conversation with Champlin and was surprised to hear that he and Mr. Thompson were no longer friends; that he asked Champlin if he would o) Tuompron’s re-election, and he said, “I have not said that I »P him. Rockafellow, charged with swindling, Mr. Eirney asked a further continuance, and stated that he had filed a charge against him for being @ common cheat, and as there Would several new witnesses subpcaaed, more time was necessary. His counsel asked that the case be hei at once, as he had been confued an unreasonable time, and he Was at great disadvantage.
