SVENING STAR WASHINGTON: SALURDAY......00.4. aly 22, 1876s CROSBY 5. NOYES. Editor. Reading Matter on Every Page Average sworn Daily Circulation over 15,000,-being more than three times that of any other daily 1 aper in Washington, and equal toe that of ali the other daily papers in the city added together. The Star for the Summer. | Perwns leaving the city may have THE STAR oes cur adie ty ok oes pee | for much pertod of thme as they may desire, at | the rate of 15 cents per week, GO cents per month, 81.75 for three months, or $3 for siz months. | S27 The money to pay for the time — | must tn ali cases accompany the order. wise the paper cannot de sent. I ————~~-e —__. | The Massachusetts Congressmen. _ The interesting question now begins to | loom up as to whieh party will make Con- | gressional gains in the fall elections. Tue Springfield Republican (independent) makes | 0 €stimate that in Massachusetts, where the present Congressioual delegation staads Six republicans and Sve democrats, that the democrats may possibly re-elect two or three, while it is within the range of eveats for the repudlicans to have them all again. In the first district Mr. Crapo is pretty cer- tain to be reelected. Tus Springfleid paper | BO States a fact well recognized In Washtagton | In saying that Mr. Crapo ‘‘is maxing a use- 1, ful and most promisiug member.” In the second district Mr. Harris retires after two terms, and will be succeeded by | Jobn E. Sanford, of Taunton. Mr. Pierca, | of the third district, deciines @ re-election, | but there will be a strong pressure upon him | toserve again. In the fourth, or other Bos- | ton district, the contest between Rafas S. | Frost and Judge Abbott will probably be | Tenewed, with the chances in favor of Judge | Abbott. in the filth district Gen. Banks’ } reelection Is couceded in advance by al parties. In the sixth district, Dr. Loring, of Salem, will possibly be the republican candidate against the present democratic | member; resuit doudtful. In the seventh district there are a lot of repabdlican candi- dates, including Gen. Batler, contesting for the honor of winning the district back from the democratic Tarbox, who with Judge Hoar’s help earried the district against Dr. Ayer, the piil-man, two years ago. In the eighth district either James Ras- sell Lowell or Goveruor Clailin will prob- ably restore the republican supremacy. In the ninth district George F. Hoar de- elines to be re-elected, and the district be- comes doubtful, but with a good candidate— Gov. Bullock, for instance—may be setdown asrepublican. In the tenth district there is to be a repetition of the contest of two years Bgo between the Independent reformers and the party machine, whlch thea resulted in the election of Prof. lye. He could be re- elected without much opposition, but it Is understood he will now take the Amherst College presidency instead. The repubil- cans proper will perbaps run Charles A. Stevens, of Ware, while the independents are likely to press Juige Spalding, of Northampton, for an independent nomina- ton, or the republican, or both. Ia the eleventh, or Springfeid district, Mr. Chapin, independent democrat, who was elected two years ago by 5,700 majority, while the guber- natorial vote was about equally divided in the district, will probably run again, and in the opinion of the Springfleld paper it will take @ very strong and po: »palar republican to beat bim. ington. Of course we in Washington know that the stories about the excessive heat in this city are slanders, but here is an cutside opiaion from an intelligent obser- ver—Mr. Halstead, of the Cinciunatt Ovn wercial—that ought to settle the question. Mr. H. is @ fiery, scorching writer, and makes things preity warm all about him. He knows what heat ts, and here ts his can- did opinion in favor of the temperature at Washington: “The potion that Washington city is so @readfuliy hot that no one can live and Work there ail summer long, is @ humbug. It 1s @ fashionable affectation. Tne average Congressman is persuaded by the flaukey- = <, those about him in Washington that Personal importance. He ins to feel to ‘nls health is@ subject of grave pub le concern. He becomes indisposed at times, @nd sees bis name in the newspapers with 8 sense of grandeur. He complains of the hea! and walks about under an umbrella medi tating toe value of insensible perspiration. He begins to need salt air or mountain breezes. 1t wouldn’t seem delicate and vast to be going about his own business. He had pene of these troubles before ——s greatmap. Greatness has made an ass Bim. If be manages to prostrate himself or deloging bis stomach with ice water and filling bis skull with brandy, he gets credit for @ dreadful amount of inteliectual labor. President Grant’s system, we are told, can- rot endure the Washington climate. Boshi Washington is not @ hotter place than St. Lou's, and it ten"t one hundred years since Grant spent the summer at St. Louis witn- out knowing that it hurt bim much.” ——S Referring to the animportant character of many items forwarded by telegraph to the press, the Loulsvillie Curier-Journal ex- presses its satisfaction at kaowing that “the weather continues very not in New York,” because if it hadn't received this informa- Yon it might have jamped to the conclusion that it was snowing in tue Empire city. The fast mali trai re to be taken off the Pennsylvania, and New York Central roais to-day, greatly to the regret of millions of people who have shared 1: the benefits of the fastservice. The fret trip of the fast mail over the Philadelphia line to Chicago was justly regarded as a Woaderful achievement, and the success of the experiment was mate the occasion for triumpliaut pootical eifa- sions, @ud was heralded throughout the World as an iilustration of Yankee enter- prise. The service subsequently was most satisfactory, the fast trains almost invaria- bly running on time, and distripating tons | of mail matter as they went. Commodore Vandervilt and Colonel Tuomas A. Scott are entitled to the thanks of the country for the | performance of this remarxabie, but poorly paid, service. Colonel Scott was the first to be in readiness for the service, and ou the 13th of September, last year, seat out the Orst fast mail train from New York city. Four days later Commodore Vanderbilt was prepared with @ train of «listinctive postal care, each being painted white, and each bearing pictures of the American eagle and the coat of arms of ths United States. His train was purely posta! in character, since it carried no passengers besides the engineer, Greman, and goveroment postal clerks; while Colone] Scott’s trains carried a lim- ited number of passengers. see The fin:eal philologists who recently heid a convention in New York began with a dis- cussion of the alphabet, whicu cams ia for a severe handlimg. Ali preseat condemned it, and one said it was @ rather goot thing for the barbarians of ancient times to iavent, bat, he said, “it does not aus wer our pur- poses, and it is a digrace to our civilization to continue our patronage of It. It is the gift of barbarism to civilization, and in adapting it to our wants we have mse it ten-fold more barbarous tian before.” To use a Tweedism, what are these learned Philologists going to do at ity aa The Charleston News and Courier, in aa ed- itorial entitled, “Hands O,” hopes tnere is xo truth in the report that Governor Cnam- | beriain asked for Federal troops.
