From these statistics it *ppears that Jerusalem does not contain wore Ub&n eight or nioe thousand, and that + Jews are rather inore numerous in North Atrica than they are in Judea. Tuere are scarcely any Jews in Italy or Spatm, and tn Grest Britain they do vot form more than one in @ thousand of the Inhabitaats. In France they are in the preportion of four to & Lhousand of the whole population, but this comparatively high proportion is dae to the fact that the Jews are very numerous tu tus departmenis on the German (rontier. Ic the annexed provinces of Alsace-Lor raive the Jews buimber out of a total population of @ million a alf, while in zerland there are 7 Jews toa Popniation of mo: n two million and ahalf. Germany, toc e Polish provinces and Alsace Lorca: more than 51 they number 1 the whole popu Avsirtan Jews lieia, where the: a eighth of ihe whole population, and where, at the rate of increase observed during tue last twenty years, they will eventually be in an absolute majority. The sixty-three million inhabitants of Russian Europe comprise 1,323,199 Jews who, until tne recent decree authorizing ihem to reside in any part of the empire, were confined to certain ly a third of the rovinee of Ga- d. Mora than a million and a half of the Russian Jews reside in the Polish provinces, and as the inhabitants of those provinces number bat 12,113,085, they form more than eleven per centain of the whole population, outnum ering i2e Poles, properly so called, by nearly hair a million. The Jews are sti!l more numerous propor- tionally in the kingdom of Poland ttseif, there belng 753,000, or thirteen per ceatum, in a total population of 5,705,000. In 1867 Hamburg contained 13,427 Jews out of @ total population of 306,507; Berlin 27,56 Out of 699.961; and St. Petersburg only 2 out of 599,128; while in Warsaw there w: 72,776 Jews in @ total population of 222,905. Thely numbers have fncreased since, au they now represent 35.9 per centum of the whole population. The Eruption of Volcanoes. THE REAL CAUSE STILL A MYSTEKY—THE MODERN HYPOTHESIS—CHEMICAL CON. STITUTION OF VOLCANIC VAPORS. The Revue Scientifique of Jaly 1 contains an interesting oa = from a& work ou volcanoes by M. K. Fuchs. Tae author, after reviewing all the different theories hitherto in vogue, distinctly repudiates the botion that voicauoes are in commauiecation with the center of the earth. The real canse of eruption, he says, is still @ mystery; tae modern hypothesis, which supposes tlie cen ter of the earth to de solid, bat enveloped by @ Stratum of rocks In a state of aqueous fusion, over which lies the hardened crust We inhabit, answers pretty nearly to the facts bronght to light by recant tuvestiga- Uon. It is bot tobe doubted that eruption: are owing to a straggle between the vapors contained in the voleanic focus and the masses of lava that stop their issae. These will absorb @ large quantity of the former, butin the end they get saturated, and the remaining vapors force & passage to the ter- restrial surface. The origin of these vapors is stated to be the sea, and provides the volcanic focus with the requisite steam. Ia support of this view the author poiuts to the fact that active volcanoes are ximost exclusively situated near a sea coast. Out of 139 that have had eruptions since the middle of the last century, ninety-elght are insular, and nearly all the others are close to the coast. Another argument in favor of the infiltration of sea water is this: that Lhe chemical con- stitution of voleanic vapors comprises all the substances that disuugaish sea water from fresh, and even in the same proportions. The real volcano is the invisibie focus st ated in the entrails of the earth, and n mere crater exposed to view. The mountain nothing but @ sort of chimney formed by avd for the passage of the lava, and it in- closes @ vast space where the lava accumu lates from tUme to time until it Is expailed by the steam. We may here state that these views coincide with those — by Dr. Montucel in bis Questions Scientiziques, 16 which he considers tne various focuses of vo'canic activity aud so many “uicers” of the terrestrial giobe, and not reaching far- ther down than a couple of miles below the jevel of the See ei eeracnanetenmaips Echves of the Day.
