It always rains in Cologne. That is as sure an item on the programme of every traveler asa visit to tne Cathedral. So we accepted it as a matter of course that we had to leave the place in a drenching rain storm. The steamer'we took for Coblenz was very small. There was no sheiter on deck, the water was pouring off the green painted tables and benches in streams. so wé had to content ourselves in the low-ceilinged cavin. % without was disheartening enough, aud a sad-looking priest was our only fellow-passenger. He was studying an English grammar, and from the quick, in- quiring way he occasionally glanced up from his book at us it was evident he was trying with il success to fit our rapid American conversational English to Ube rules he was stadying. A party of young Englishmen soon came aboard and satdown to dine at one end of the cabin. Their drenched clothing, disgusted counte- pances and the silence that prevailed among them ail went lo teil of the unfavorabie im- pression the river had made upon them. A remark pow and then as to the “beastly” state of the weather would cause the puz- zled priest to look raore perplexed than ever over the strange application of words in our janguage. A party of students picked up at Bonn, whose college boys are noted for their gay spirits, burs: in upon the quiet littie fabio like @ whirlwind. There was no more dignity while they remained, for their con- versation and antics were so trresistably fanpy thateven the cross Englishmes and melancholy priest laughed vutrignt, to say nothing of our own Hercalean eilorts to gaze tranquilly out of the windows. COBLENZ. Nine o'clock In the evening saw us on the wharfat Coblenz. The rain was falling in torrents and the blurred, misty light from the river lamps only served to make the darkness more intense. It was but a few steps to the hotel, and while going there the quick tread of acouple of officers, followed by the tramp of a body of men, made us real- ize directly that we were in one of the great- est fortified cities of Europe. This fact was impressed upon us @ little more than ws agreeable before we floished Coblenz, for it rained upmercifully two whole days, and there was nothiog todo but find amuse- ment in gazing out of the windows at the military. Lirectly facing us across the river the noble fortress of Ebrenbreitstein crowned @ rocky height. The mountain path leading up to the fortifications was crowded wilh horsemen aad infantry con. Upuously. From the footof the slope to within a few yards of the hotel entrance ex- tended a drawbridge. The constant passage of boats up and down the river kept the bridge moving in and out,so there were lively scenes ong the crowds of sol- diers and market women when they all had lo wait.
