PAUL. rday morsing the following brief ph appeared in these colamns:— Ben anroupces that ne will walk ier rope ion bridge at tbree o'clock thus ." Ben farther intimate that he would like to see a crowd present, so that the hat may be profitably passed at the close of the performance.” True to his promise, “Banjo Beu,” a bas been familiavly knowa at St. Paul and Minneapolis, walked down to the new sus- pension bridge towers @ little before three o'clock, and with a foolhardiness born of insavity or strong drink, and with the agil ity of @cat, clambered up to tue working cable stretched over the east and west piers of the uncompleted stracture. Tals “cable” is @ bunch of Wire not more than one inch throngh, over 100 feet above the ground and stretching like @ thread between the river banks. Had Ben's past career been of such & nature as to create @ presumption that he was in earnest concerning bis rope-walking venture, or had ar Sg been placed on the value of bis life it is probable that the authorities would have prevented the “ex- bibition.” But Ben was queer, and many thougbllessly gathered at the sus; 10a bridge at three o’cleck, the majority be- Heving after looking up to the thread awing- ing at itsdizzy heignt, that he would back oul. But the venturesome or insane Ben, weari a ir Of dirty white cotton gloves and ol rubber shoes, clambered up to tne cable and promptly began crawling down the slender wire, band over hand, and with his rabbered feet crossing it. The crowd began tosuspect thata sickening sight was near them, but they continued to gaze at the dark object verhead. high o . Ben crawled down the slope for a distance of ‘haps fifty feet, when it became evident cable was hurting bis feet. Asiftorest them, he swung his feet from the wire and sustained the weight of bis body with his-hands alone for several minutes, and =e to struggle as if trying to raise himself up to the wire again. But his strength or courage had deserted bim, and after a few more ineffectual efforts to regain bis position on the cable, his hands lost their cunning, and the crowd suddenly had its surfeit of tragic horror. Ben's hold was broken, the cable gave & perceptivle bound upward, and a human body shotdowa to the earth with the speed of @ rocket, alighting with @ sickento; thud” oa the sloping bank of the river, about twenty feet from the ter. In the frightful descent tha body bad partially turned, so that it fell sideways ou the hard ground, and the spec- tators rushed to the assistance of the mor- tally wounded street musician and amateur Tope-waiker. dr. Elljott Was summoned and found Ben breathing when he came, but pronounced the injury mortal, and in a few moments Banjo Ben had breathed his last, some of those near him averring that in bis uncon- scious state he faiolly murmured the words he bad often spoken in bis life, Guilty, your Honor.”— (St. Paul Pioneer, July 9. COL. PRICE'S MARRIAGES—A Milliontire who Changed his Wives to Suit his Oonvenience, Justice Pratt, in Brooklyn, yesterday, re- fused the application of the third wife of th late mililouatre brewer, Col. W. W. Pri for the custody of her eldest child. The h tory of the Colonel's marriages is perl the most peculiar in the records of New York litigation. He abandoned a wife in Eagland, and came to New York poor. Here he mar- ried, and after having had two children by the second wiie, tod & decree declar- ing tbe marriage null and void, on the ground that bis first wife, whom he believei to be dead, was alive. Soon afterward Col. Price was again conveniently assured that his first wife was realiy dead, and he married a third lime. There were two children by this mar- riage, bovh giris, and both deaf mutes. When he grew tired of the last arrangement he again discovered that he had been misin- formed as to the demise of his original wife, 8nd procured another decree deciaring his third marriage voidable and null and void thereafter, the children’s Keep the elder. In June last Mr. Price died, baving appointed guardians testamentary for the elaer child, to whom he left $59,000. The third wife brought the child into court on & writ of habeas aS, aud asked for its Custody. It was alleged among otter tinge that two of her guardians were the children by the marriage, to whom her $59,000 Would go in case of her death before reach- ing full age, and that it was not safe to leave the eblid in such guardianship. Jadge Pratt gave leave to petitioner to apply upon the same pepers to any Judge of the 4th aistrict for the relief sought.—{ N. ¥. Sa, ith.
