The processes used are novel in extended this region, and deserve a notice. The work is being tional government. and is vision of Col. 8. T. Abert, mediate charge of THE LEDGE OF Which is{being removed is a nite, mi: with quartz and m’ I about 0 feet ia dengtn e heat pete rock only about 6 feet below the sur! water. One bed of rock Ww feet below low water maré ts now 17 feet below. The existence mid-channel was owing to its bardness, and While the softer blue gneiss was worn and washed away by the action of the water, these masses of hard rocks the first thing that ts done is to find out where they are, their beight and extent, &c., which is done by sounding with long poles. The diver then goes down and adjusts the drills at seme points where a blast ir desirable. The Grills are worked by two rotary engines upon ® platform which is lowered abd raised with the tice. The drills are cylindrical, made of steel, with rough diamonds inserted in the end. They cut toto the hard rock at the rate of a foot an hour, leaving inside the drill a clean core of cylindrical stone, which is withdrawn and the cberge inserted. These d'amond drills are worth from #400 to ¢800. They make from 5€0 to 1,000 revolutions per minute. BLASTING. After the core is taken ont the diver In- ferts in the hoje @ tin tube filled with nitro- glycerine, which is discbarged by means of an electro-battery. When the blasting is to be done, the entire apparatus is moved at a convenient distance, to prevent ona ana bie damage. On account of the heavy ressure of water, ro rocks haye as yet n thrown to the surface, but the water is thrown to @ considerable height. In con- nection with the drilling engines there are three pumps which force water down the cylinder upon which the ¢rill works to keep the diamon¢e cool and to fore? up the dust. The diamonds never wear, but the steel in which they 2re placed does, and sometimes the diamonds are thus lost. After the rocks are blasted, the diver goes down, fastens a chain around the detached portions, and they &re brought up by @ seven-horse power en- gine. Upon the top of the rock a peller wing was found, which was lost, of course, by some steamer striking the rock; a part of an anchor was also found at the same place. THE DIVERS. Two drivers are employed, who work five hours a day each and They fay the sensation when one goes down for the first time is fearful, and @ “fellow thinks of @ good — he hasn’t e.”” water two or three hours at a time and come up with bleeding hands from contact with the sharp corners of the rocks. are clogged witb lead to keep them down.
